Prime Cattle (under 30 mos) Sales every Monday at 11:30am

Retail customers were out in force for the April show and sale of Primestock with Phil Gregory securing the top price a 555kg British Blue cross heifer from F&B Smith of Masongill at 339.5p/kg or £1884 for the family shop, DA Gregory&Sons in Bacup. Mesrs Gregory followed this with a 530kg Limousin heifer from S&NV Jowett of Queesnbury at 327.5p/kg or £1736, a price equalled by Mesrs E&M Townley &  Son of Clapham whose 560kg British Blue cross heifer also sold at 327.5p/kg or £1834 to Knavesmire Butchers in York. Best steer p/kg price was another F&B Smith entry a 615kg Limousin cross which sold to Ralph Pearson, Bradford for 313.5p/kg or £1928. Mesrs Pearson were leading buyers in the heavier cattle with the leading gross price a 715kg Limousin steer from Hargreaves Farms, Walton le Dale which grossed £2063 after making 288.5p/kg. D&A Gregory secured the second highest price the third prize heifer a British Blue from S&P Scriven, Elslack which realised £1959 or 326.5p/kg. Robertshaws Farm Shop at Thornton secured the leading lightweight heifer a 430kg Limousin from

L Bamforth&Sons, Wainstalls weighing 430kg and making 300.5p/kg.

N/S LAMBS
A great show of lambs today for the Easter Prize Show & Sale and a trade to match and thank you to Anthony Swales for judging. The handyweight bracket averaged £144.48 per head, whilst heavier lambs averaged £154.75 and overweights £160.
The champion was shown by Robert Towers of Ingleton, weighing 44kg it sold for £169 to Hartshead Meat Co, Mossley. Charles Marwood presented the reserve Champion and this weighed 41kg and made £168 to Knavesmire Butchers York. Mark Evans of Steeton made £163 of 48kg Suffolk crosses, whilst Messrs CM&J Stott of Chipping made £162 of 46kg Continental crosses. Overall average of 337p/kg.
 

O/S LAMBS
A much sharper trade for Standard and Medium Weights with all classes dearer on the week. Heavies were a shade dearer, overweights were an excellent trade, buoyed by the trade for well fleshed ewes.

OVER 52kg
Dearer on the week, to average £2 per head more. Main of the good overweights £140 to £160, with Thomas Boothman taking top price per head for Texel crosses. Nick Parker Silsden £159 and EP&JM Hutchinson £158.

46kg to 52kg
£3 per head up on average, for what was generally a plainer show than last week.
JE Burrow Hanlith taking top price with 46kg at £170 or 369p.
EP&JM Hutchinson of Faceby brought their usual weekly consignment and also made £170 per head of 50kg continentals, other pens at £168 £166 and £162 from this home, or 340p, 342p and 347p.
A&B Simpson Derbyshire made £168 or 357p of 47kg Continentals, followed by TA Robinson Longridge with 46kg at £163.

36kg to 45kg
Chief price per kilo was 448p when Messrs Atkinson Harrogate sold 38kg Beltex at £170 per head. With several other pens top side of 400p including JE Burrow 418p 43kg £180 which were the top price head and 410p (38kg £156), AM Leach 41kg £166 410p for the Champion Pen of Hoggs and T Boothman Linton 400p or £176.  

Hill Bred
Mule Wethers sold to £140 this week from Thomas Boothman, others £138 Nick Parker Silsden, £130 C Nelson & Son Bordley and £130 RG Church Ltd. Mashams made to £119 from Steve Dorey and £117 RG Church. Better Mules and Mashams 250p to 265p topping 265.1p from H Downs & Son.

Horned lambs saw some excellent price, C Nelson & Son sold Swaledales to £131 and T Boothman to £122 or 254p form SR Dorey.
S Forshaw & Son Longridge made £119.50 and £118 twice or 287.8p twice and 285p of 41kg Scotch Blackies.
A&AR Phillipson made £119 of Herdwicks and £123.50 of Lonk Wethers.
K Lister & Son sold Cheviots to £128.50 and H Downs & Son made £122.50 of Gritstones.

EWES

383 Cull Ewes, Rams and Goats in total today with more mediums and lambing casualties in today and a shortage of weight. Best bred Texel ewes with weight £200-£237.50 top price Texel from S&NV Jowett, Queensbury. Other vendors with Texel and Texel crossed ewes reaching over the £200 mark included JP&KE Hartley, Beamsley at £227.50. A&CL Gray, Summerbridge £219.50. JJ Dalby & Sons Harewood and AN Bolland £204.50. Medium pure ewes £170-£190 with smaller end £130+ First crossed white faced ewes regular £160-£185 for weight and mediums £130-£145. Smaller end full meat ewes £110-£122. Leaner white-faced ewes with frame £115-£135 and plain end ewes £70-£105. Texel Ramks sold to £237.50 form RA&M Earnshaw.
Suffolk’s sold to £247.50 from AN Bolland, Bolton Abbey. Pure Suffolk’s ¾ meat £165-£180 half meat ewes £150 and leaner ewes £120. Plain ended £95-£110.

BFL Ewes sold to £224.50 from N Parker, Silsden.

Mule ewes serious again with weight £140-£153.50 with top price from RE Metcalfe, Linton. Other vendors included A & B Simpson, Derbyshire, JD Taylor & Son, Broughton, CD&RF Kitching, Threshfield, NH Platts, Wakefield, AN Bolland, Bolton Abbey and N Parker all exceeding £140 for pens of Mule ewes. and medium ewes £120-£132. Smaller end full meat mules £110-£120, Medium lean mules £110-£125 with plainer sorts with frame £85-£100 and plain smaller ewes £60-£75. Swale ewes sold to £117.50 from CT Akrigg, Skipton and following just behind at £114.50 from KA&HL Fawcett, Barden.  Full meat Swales £90-£115, half meat swales £65-£75 with plain ewes £40-£62. A few plain casualties less.
Other Hill and Horned ewes saw Nathan Wade sell Lonks to £121.50, Cheviots to £115.50 from CM&J Stott & Sott of Chipping, Dalesbred to £104.50 K Lister & Son, Lleyn £130.50 form T Riley, Teeswater Rams £187.50 from K Lister & Son

60 Rearing Calves to £475 Sales Every Monday at 10:30am

Calves saw trade slightly easier with a large show of bobbies in and less mediums. Some Black & White bull stirks sold first at 4/5-month-old selling to £320. Medium Black and Whites at a month old sold at £70-£110 depending on goods. Younger goods £40-50 with a few real bobbies either side of a tenner. A large show of 2-week-old shorthorn out of crossed cows sold between £60-£85 for the better-bred end with young plainer goods less. Hereford bulls at 6/8-week-old £190-£250 with bobbie £70-£100 and plain youngsters out crossed cows £30-£55. Medium Blue bulls £330-£390 with smaller end £285-£300. Blue heifers good to sell for strong mediums £260-£310 with smalls £200-£240 and a few bobbies £155-£200. Lim bulls sold to £475 and Lim heifers sold to £370.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot - A Smaller show this week, but prices probably around £5 to £10 per outfit up on the week. Some Older ewes with single lambs getting away to a straight trade, but a nice run of Continental Correct Ewes with Twins finding a good following from JM Smith & Son selling to £280. Some Annual Consignments booked in for next week already including 40 Texel Shearlings with Texel/Beltex Lambs. Then two weeks time its our Easter Show & Sale.
