Prime Sheep

A better quality entry of sheep with over 2100 lambs penned for sale and a sharper trade on the week with the overall average up £4 per head, especially for nice bred sorts, aided by an additional wholesale customer making their first foray into the Skipton sale ring this season.
Today was Monthly Show day, and it was Steve Dorey who took the judging job on, in readiness for his appointment as the judge of the Butchers Lambs classes at this years Great Yorkshire Show. His choice as champions came from Messrs Hill & Wright of Doncaster with a pen of Beltex crosses making £148 (40kg 370p) purchased by mart regulars Knavesmire Butchers of York. Reserve Champions were 5 Texel Beltex crosses at 44kg from Messrs JA Gibson & Son of Tadcaster selling at £143 and purchased on behalf of Hartshead Meats in Mossley.
Messrs Hill & Wright sold another pen of lambs at £155 (48kg 322p) purchased by Kendalls Farm Butchers.
Messrs JA Gibson & Son sold additional pens at £147 (49kg 300p) to Robertshaws Farmshop, and also at £146 (43kg 339p) to Knavesmire Butchers.
J&F Nutter of Hurst Green presented their regular run of heavy butchers lambs and had the joint top price at £155 selling to Kendalls Farm Butchers, and £154 on two other occasions to Knavesmire Butchers and John Kearns Butchers of Shipley.

Adrian Leach of Hebden Bridge made second top per kilo of 361p when his pen of 41kg Texel Beltex made £148 to Vivers Scotlamb.
James Garth & Son of Keasden and R Emmott of Silsden both achieved £146 with Continental cross lambs. Several other pens in the £140’s.
Smarter bred lambs were a better trade this week with a larger number achieving 300p or more and the next grade 270p/295p.
Better skinned halfbred lambs and lesser end of the ¾ bred sorts 250p/270p, commercial sorts mainly 230/250p, odd plainer pens 220p.
Heavy Lambs were a good trade and short of requirements with 45kg to 55kg lambs finding an excellent enquiry, with the better end mainly in the £130’s and £140’s.

Ewes-
Not let up in trade with the ¾ meat ewes and full meat ewes with no fat on selling to the trade of the day. Well bred ewes with size £130+ with first cross ewes £120-£135. Trade topped at £181.50 from Hurries Farm, Otterburn. Some good well-bred ewes from N&AD Boynton, Ripon sold at £157.50. Full meat mediums £105-£115 with lean mediums £90-£105 and plain ewes or small lean ewes below the mark. Big mules a good trade but the trade of the day for the mules was the medium full/ lean meat. Big ewes £108-£123.50 but good framed ewes with lean meat £88-£102. Lean mediums £75-£82 and plain ewes less. 294 Mules avg £90. Over 300 swales and horned ewes in the entry with large runs of plain ewes sold. Plain from the teens to mis 30s. Lean meat £30-£45 and good framed ewes making more. Good meat swales £70-£84.50. Cheviots sold to £93.50. Bleu De Maine ewes sold to £134.50 from RKR Wood, Stokesley. With an ethnic festival coming up all sheep are required next week with lean good framed ewes and good framed ewes in demand.

Continental Bulls av.£393, Native Bulls av.£282, Continental Heifers av. £385.50, Native Heifers av. £285

With a ring full of buyers and a light show calves are inevitably a buoyant trade so why some producers are excluded from access to trade at these levels is open to conjecture. 19-23 day old Holstein bulls £80-£170 and a 31 day old Holstein bull at £190. M&R Smith’s British Blue Bull calves at 6 weeks are well reared and sold to £465 with a similar aged British Blue heifer at £370. Limousin bulls under 40 days bred from Friesian cows sold well for JC&DJ Marshall & Sons to £470 with a similarly bred heifer at an identical age making £385. Mesrs Marshall also sold a sire identified Aberdeen Angus heifer at the same age which made £285 whilst the Angus bulls this time bred from Holstein cows topped at £295 for PJ&JE Bolland.
