4,254 Prime Sheep comprising 3396 Prime Lambs & 858 Cast Ewes & Rams

An extra 1,000 lambs in the mart today, but they were handled with ease as for the fourth week on the bounce we averaged 238p across the board for 3,396 head of lambs.
Heavy lambs were a very good trade today, with 52kg and above levelling at £123 and 46kg to 52kg at £113 or 238p and still with 900 in this weight range, a lot more could have been sold. An ordinary type was 220p to 230p, plenty of well fleshed fed first cross types 230p to 240p, and smarter goods 250p to 300p or more.
Handier weight sheep saw smart sorts and anything fed again a good trade, generally 235p upwards, with the grass fed commercial lambs 220p/225p. The smart end of lambs were an animated trade and more of these types are needed week in week out for our regular wholesale and retail buyers. Top trade today was Ellis Bros, Addingham Moorside selling 5 Beltex at £163 or 370p/kg who also had 44kg Beltex at £150 per head as well.
George Sunderland of Hebden Bridge hit £160 or 363p for a pen of 5 weighing 44kg, heading off with Knavesmire Butchers for their retail shop in York. Mr Sunderland also sold 42kg Beltex at £150.
J Brigg of Wilsden won his first ever Monthly Primestock Championship today when his pen of 5 were picked by show judge Will Rathmell. They later sold for £155 44kg 352p to Brayton Farmshop. Mr Brigg sold other pens at £158.50 and £151.50 to Hartshead Meats Mossley.
Paul Drinkall of Gargrave weighed in at £158 with a super 49kg Beltex at 322p selling to Knavesmire Butchers. John & Alison Spensley of Thorlby topped their run up at £151.50, whilst others hitting £150 were James Garth & Son of Keasden, and Ali Jenkinson of Langbar.
A further 20 pens sold in the £140’s and 34 pens in the £130’s. 35 pens made 300p or more, with a further 51 pens from 270p to 297p. A better class of commercial handy weight was 235p to 260p, the ordinary types 220p/230p.
Light weight lambs were a very good trade so long as they were well covered. 35kg 37kg lambs nice sorts, £86/£92, ordinary types £82/£85.
Mule Wethers again finding an excellent enquiry, good fleshy sorts 45kg to 50kg making 225p plus, whilst a more commercial type around the 220p mark. Masham wethers to 234p.
A few Horned lambs sneaking on to the market now, weighing 33kg to 43kg, and they can command 190p to 210p depending upon finish levels.

The ewes were a good trade again today at Skipton, some centres seeing a fall in price these last few days, but no sign of a let up yet on Mondays. Several large runs of farmed ewes penned as part of the 858 passing through today. Big Mules £105-£117.50, mediums £85-£98, Lean Mule ewes £68-£78 with plain ewes less generally around the £50-£60 range.
White faced ewes leading the trade again, smart ewes £120-£140, heavies £145-£155 with a pen of 4 from A&CL Gray, Harrogate selling to £167.50. First cross heavies £128-£142, mediums full meat £105-£118, lean ewes £78-£90 with some big half meat ewes more money and plain white-faced ewes all over depending on frame.
Horned ewes a nice trade, better Swales on the day £60-£75.50, some medium weight well fleshed ewes £52-£58, plenty of lean ewes with frame £35-£45 and plain ewes £20-£30. ¾ meat Lonk ewes £75-£80, lean meat Lonks £55-60 and smaller leaner ewes £48.
More ewes required every week to fulfil orders ringside.
