2,261 Prime Sheep comprising 1,488 Spring Lambs, 232 Hoggs & 541 Cast Ewes & Rams
Lamb numbers taking a sharp increase again as more vendors get to having a first draw of lambs and getting into more batches. Medium to heavy lambs were short of requirements and very good to sell, with the sale peaking at £202 per head (46kg 439p) from JA Gibson & Son of Church Fenton, Tadcaster selling to Brayton Farm Shop, Selby.
Close behind were Tom Hill & Ruby Wright of Doncaster at £190 (42kg) that were also top price per kilo on the day at 454p again selling to Brayton Farmshop.
Well fleshed, premium quality heavies and mediums were keenly contested with 51 further pens making £160 to £183, whilst the quality handyweights (40/44kg) tended to make £140/£155 and lighterweight smarts £130/£140, with odd pens such as D&A Livestock, Haverah Park making £170 of 39kg Continentals or 435p these selling to Knavesmire Butchers in York. The same combination trading 38kg at £164 per head.
Messrs Daggett of Burnsall made 429p (37kg £159) whilst Toothill Bros of Doncaster made 423.1p (39kg £165). 10 pens in total over 400p today.
Next grade of premium lamb was 350p to 400p, whilst a well fleshed commercial lamb 40kg plus was most likely to make 330p to 345p. More lighter weights on the market today as vendors understandably look to take advantage of the prices on offer, but anything just lacking the shine needed was mainly around the 310/330p region, smarter sorts could command a shade more.
Suffolk Mule and a more commercial loose skinned Continental cross generally around the 320p/325p mark or a shade either side.
Todays June Primestock Show saw judging undertaken by Mr John Gibson of Vivers Scotlamb, Annan, and his choice of Champions came from Dave and Laura Coar of Darwen when their 5 Continentals made £180 weighing 44kg at 409p snapped up by Knavesmire Butchers for their retail shop in York.
