Prime Sheep Sales Every Monday at 12:30pm

3,340 Prime Sheep comprising 2732 Prime Hoggs, 608 Cast Ewes & Rams

LAMBS
The first Spring Lambs of the season forward from CM&J Stott & Son of Chipping Preston selling away to a reasonable trade to top £150 and average 266p.

Another mixed show of hoggs saw an overall average of 259p (SQQ 270p) which looks a nice result on AHDB for the day.
Not many best Beltex’s today with only 377 head in a show of 2800 overall, but what were on offer sold well, with 4 pens over 400p, topping at 416p from John Midgley Luddendenfoot, Henry Atkinson 414p and two pens form G&MA Jackson of Little Eccleston making 405p and 403p. The best of the rest were 350p to 395p, with others at 290p to 350p depending on shape and weight. Overall breed average of 333p.

Good Heavy lambs were a decent trade today, especially anything of better quality or well fed, whilst a medium weight was a reasonable go again for nicer sorts, commercials slightly more mixed. Lightweight lambs a sharp trade, especially well fleshed sorts. Mule lambs were in comparison a good trade, better runs around the 245-250p mark.

OVER 52kg
Some heavy Texel Tup Lambs weighing 69kg sold at £169, and some 61kg tups at £165.50 from HB Atkinson. Two pens made £156, first from R Emmott Silsden and then from WAVJ&JA Towler of Grindleton. Other better heavies made £138 to £152 depending on quality. Commercials late £120s to mid £130’s.

46kg to 52kg
Just shy of 1000 hoggs weighing 46 to 52kg, with Messrs Atkinson selling to £168.50 and £160. EP&JM Hutchinson sold pens at £154 £152 £150. Other better pens in the range at £135 to £150.

36kg to 45kg
This weight range levelled at 272p for all breeds, a fine result in the current climate. Messrs Atkinson topped the sale at £178, followed by John Midgley at £175 for the Champion pen of lambs sellig to Kanvesmire butchers in York. Messrs Burrows of Kirkby Malham made £170 and £168, both pens again selling to Knavesmire, followed by RL&AR Phillips of Burton Leonard who had 7 pens from £164 to £168, and G&MA Jackson Little Eccleston at £163. Commercial lambs could range from 240p to 270p depending on quality and weight, whilst a nice better skinned prime type of lamb could be 265p to 310p again depending on weight and type.

35kg or less
A weight range that is good to sell, especially for well fleshed types. Messrs G&MA Jackson sold 35kg Beltex at £135 or 385p, but handy Continental lambs were generally a nice trade.

Fed Mules and Mashams were better to sell this week, several runs 245p, pushing 250p if nice weights and and fed.  Tops at £131, with handier lambs weighing mid to late 40’s achieving £110-£117

EWES

Cull ewes met a competitive trade again with buyers just a little more cautious on the over fat mules and bidding more keenly for full meat ewes instead. White faced ewes avg £126 with a top price of £204.50 from High Harbour Farm, Middle Rasen, North Lincs. Other heavy fed ewes £170-£190 for both white headed ewes and Suffolk’s. Heavy first crossed ewes £150-£170 and medium full meat first crossed ewes £125-£140. Lean ewe’s half and ¾ meat sold at £75-£100 for cross bred ewes. Whilst anything with full meat reached well over the £100 mark. Heavy Mules sold to £130.50 from EP&JM Hutchinson, Stokesley. Heavy mules sold at £115-£130 whilst full meat ewes with frame £108-£118. Lean mules with frame £85-£100 and plain ewes or ewes short of weight £55-£70. Full meat large Swales £80-£91.50 mediums £65-£75 and lean ewes £48-£58 depending on frame. Plain ewes £30-£50. Cheviots sold to £129.50 from DW&C Towler, Clitheroe.
