Prime Cattle
Edge continues to be off the clean cattle trade although 55% of the entry weighed over 580kg with a steer average of 244p/kg and heifers 233p/kg. That said the top prices per kg were still 255.5p/kg for a 585kg LImousin cross steer from Simon Bennett and 260.5p/kg for a 575kg Blue heifer from CD&RF Kitching. Top gross prices were a 635kg Limousin cross steer from Mesrs Kitching which fell to Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers in Bradford for £1584 or 249.5p/kg and a 595kg Limousin heifer from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton at £1502 (252.5p/kg) which sold to Robertshaws Farm Shop at Thornton. Robertshaws also added the leading priced steer at 255.5p/kg from Simon Bennett whilst the top heifer at 260.5p/kg (CD&RF Kitching) fell to Ralph Pearson.

A tighter show of lambs today, but a packed line up of buyers competing strongly for sheep of all classes, right from the smartest end all through to the lightweight hill bred wethers, producing an overall selling average of £120.92 per head or 274p/kg. Smartest lambs were in high demand topping at £170 and 400p/kg, but still numbers of these way short of requirements, with commercial lowland lambs and Hill bred inc Mules making up most of the entry.
Lowland Lambs over 52kg – Top price in this bracket was £155 from DN&D Capstick of Bolton by Bowland who’s 53kg Continentals sold to Robertshaws Farmshop, Thornton. W Stapleton & Son Hellifield followed closely with two pens at £153 each, selling to Worsley Wholesale and also to P Watson. EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby were next in line selling 54kg at £152 to Knavesmire Butchers York, £150 twice to Harthead Heat Meats and Knavesmire Butchers, and then £149 to A Traves Meat Wholesaler. In between also at £150 were Nick & Charlotte Brown Claughton selling to A Atkinson. The main of the overweight bracket seeing prices of £135 to £150
Lowland Lambs 46kg to 52kg – This category averaged an amazing £131.20 per head for lowland lambs, with EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby topping the sale at £170 per head or 361p for 47kg Continentals selling to Hartshead Meat Co, with the same vendors also achieving £169 to Hartshead Meats for 48kgs, and others at £163 £160 £159 £154 £153 and £151.50 in a run of 75 lambs averaging £151.19! Ellis Bros Addingham were in the prices as usual with 46kg at £164 or 356p to Vivers Scotlamb. I&M Lancaster Clitheroe made £155 of 46kg, and F Webster Leeming Bar £155 of 48kg.
Lowland Lambs 36kg to 45kg – More lambs in the £160’s for EP&JM Hutchinson when selling 44kg at £169 or 385p, and also 42kg Continentals at £168 these being the top price per kilo at 400p purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. A great run of lambs from DN&D Capstick of Bolton by Bowland were up to £169 for 45kg selling to Vivers Scotlamb, and others at £163.50 £158 £157.50 and £156 or per kilo at 385p 375p and 367p and an average for the trailer full at £160.65 per head. Ellis Bros also in there at £158 or 385p/kg for 41kg’s. Other best lambs in this category 320p to 360p, but lambs now creeping up in price and meaning the next grade at a handy weight are topr side of 300p, and a straight commercial lamb is 280p to 300p.
Lowland Lambs up to 35kg – Some smart from David & Sam Asquith of Otley leading the way weighing 35kg and making £114 per head or 325p, followed by Haddon Farms with 35kg at £112 or 320p, and J Shuttleworth & Son Rhylstone taking home £111 for 35kg Continentals. Lighter end of the range saw WH&WJ Hartley Barlick make £86 or 287p of 30kg Texels with 30kg to 35kg Continentals in the £80’s and £90’s.
Mule Wethers – These continue to attract some cracking prices for all weights, with over 400 Mules in the entry averaging £118.33 per head. Tops at £136 came from AC Simpson, Bradwell, who also sold pens of 26 head at £130.50 and 25 head at £130. J Bosworth sold Mules at £133, followed by GW Thackray making £130. Per kilo tops at 277p J Bosworth, other best pens 270p plus, but generally Mules in the 250’s and 260’s and a breed average of 261p.
Other Hill bred and Horned lambs – an increased number of hill lambs forward, especially lightweight horned types. Cheviot Lambs up into the £120’s with a run of fed lambs from LJ Penter Littondale, topping £127.50 & £125.50, other better end late teens to mid 120’s, or topping per kilo at 285.9p from GW Thackray Harewood. Cheviot Lambs typically 260p to 285p averaging 276p. Messrs Penter sold Herdwick lambs to a top of £130 per head, and these heading to retail butcher John Kearns for his retail butchers in Shipley or to 255p from CH&F Fearnley, Barden. Horned lambs sold to £110 from R&KA Burley & Son, with other medium weight or heavier types £100 plus, whilst lightweight horned lambs 33kg-36kg in fine demand again, SBF to 272p, Lonk to 272p Dalesbred to 261p and Swale to 250p, but nice sorts of handy little horned lambs generally 240p to 260p.
Ewes - 352 ewes in today with a lesser show in general in. Horned ewes as dear and dearer on the week with lean/ plain horned ewes. Mules sold to similar prices and White Faced ewes sold with meat selling better and lean meat a touch less. 81 Whites faced ewes in with strong, full meat ewes just as dear. Best ewes with weight £120-£140 and best Suffolks the same. Crossed heavy ewes £115-£120 but a shortage of these in today. Mediums pure ewes £100-£110 and half meat mediums white faced ewes generally £80-£95. Mules similar some massive ewes just above £100. Big end £85-£95 Mediums £76-£82 plain £51-£65. Swales sold with best meat but nor massive ewes £69-£75 Lean meat around £55 and plain £20-£45 depending on ewes. More ewes required next week with full ringside of buyers able to take high volume of numbers.
