Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A small but high-quality show found another very good trade with retail demand growing stronger. Top call was 275.5p/kg bought by James Robertshaw on behalf of Robertshaws Farm Shop, this for a 575kg Limousin cross heifer from the Threshfield farming partnership of CD&RF Kitching which grossed to £1584. Robertshaws Farm Shop were also responsible for purchasing the top gross on the day a 610kg Limousin cross heifer from Simon Bennett of Silsden Moor which realised £1668 or 273.5p/kg. Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers of Bradford were also in the hunt for high quality stock in anticipation of increasing demand, accounting for the leading steer a 580kg Limousin steer from Mesrs Kitching at 269.5p/kg (£1563) and numerous other high-quality entries including the second leading price a 615kg Limousin cross heifer from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton for £1645 or 267.5p/kg. Steers averaged 269.5p/kg and heifers 256.59p/kg

Cull Cow Prices

Trade was up again for a small entry which comprised all dairies bar one. With more finish in the market, the best dairies were 130-140p/kg regardless of age and plenty of confidence for the future as plain cows to graze were 120p+. A 2015 born Limousin cast bull weighing 920kg made 170.5p/kg or £1569.

Sheep keep getting dearer!
Headlines today are 2676 Lambs average 297.1p/kg or £130.52 per head, with an SQQ of 306.1p.
A small show of only 168 Beltex Lambs selling to £175 per head, other Beltex £155 to £168. But it was the commercial types seeing handyweights 300p to 340p, and nice Mediums at 300p to 320p.
A large show of nearly 1,000 Hill bred lambs forward this week with Mule and Masham Wethers £130 to £140 for good mediums and heavies, and handyweights 280p-290p. Similar Story with nice handy and lightweight horned wethers at 270p to 290p.

 

Lowland Lambs over 52kg –  
Best Heavy Continental Lambs £150 to a top £166.50 from EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby purchased by Kendalls Farm Butchers of Pateley Bridge & Harrogate, the same vendor also selling at £164 to Knavesmire Butchers of York, and Glen Bell of Dibbles Bridge showing his usual run of heavies up to £163 purchased by Farmers Fresh. 14 more pens in the £150’s.

46kg to 52kg Lowland Lambs
S Forshaw & Sons Longridge sold lambs to £168 per head (50kg). Rob Bailes, Aldborough was next at £159 for a pen of 6 at 46kg.  Followed by 48kg at £158 for A&C Simpson. All three pens purchased by Hartshead Meats.
Messrs Hutchinson sold 5 pens in the £150’s, £155 to Robertshaws Farmshop, £153 and £150 to Hartshead Meats, £151.50 to Kendalls Farm Butchers and £150 to Countrystyle Meats Farmshop Lancaster. A list as long as your arm from £140 to £149 too numerous to mention.

36kg to 45kg Lowland Lambs:
Top sale price of the day was in this weight category as S Forshaw & Son, Longridge achieved £175 per head for a 45kg Beltex cross (388p) selling to Vivers Scotlamb.
Walter Parkinson from Garstang made £171 of a Beltex lamb (41kg 417p) again to Vivers Scotlamb, also selling 2 at £166 (39kg at 425p) a single Beltex at £160 (37kg 433p) and 3 at £160 (41kg 390p)
JE Burrow of Kirkby Malham made £170 of 4 Beltex Lambs (40kg 425p) this time to Knavesmire Butchers, and £169 of 5 Beltex Lambs (39kg 433p) to Vivers Scotlamb and a third pen at £160 (42kg).
EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby made £167.50 of 2 Beltex crosses (45kg 372p) and £164.50 of 2 45kg Beltex.
Commercial lambs 290p to 330p in this weight bracket.

 

35kg and less Lowland Lambs:
As usual, nice pens of 33kg 34kg Continentals £100 to £115, 300/330p.

Mule and Masham Wethers
A cracking trade today, breed average of 280p, and tops of 296p from A&B Simpson Hope Valley, and also from CD&RF Kitching, Threshfield. Tops at £142 and £138 from EP&JM Hutchinson, followed by A&B Simpson £138 £137.50 and £133.50, Steve Dorey £138 and £132. CD&RF Kitching £134 £133.50.

 

Other hill bred lambs:
Cheviot lambs hitting £140.50 from A&B Simpson and £140 S Forshaw & Son or generally 280p to 295p.
Best Horned lambs in the £120’s, £128 Dick Burley, Nidderdale, £123.50 J Greenwood Addingham, £123 Beeston Hall Farms. Per kilo to 294p from S&P Scrivin Elsack.

 

Ewes -
Up a gear again with all classes dearer again. 376 passed through with averages high. Suffolks topped at £167.50 with heavies £150-£167.50 Mediums £125-£145 and lean meat ewes £105-£115. White faced ewes £140-£159.50 for heavies and Mediums not far behind with pure bred mediums £130-£150 and crossed mediums £120-£130 and Lean meat ewes £100-£112. Mules sold well with heavy mules £110-£118.50 mediums £92-£100 and lean mules £80-£90 plain mules £65-£70. 65 Suffolks avg £130, 144 Texel/ Texel X ewes avg £120, Char ewes avg £137, Swaledales avg £72.

Calves a serious trade for the rearing goods. Thanks to the vendors who brought them in after a last-minute call out for Blues of all classes. Blue Bulls sold to £450 with 15 in the entry and 9 of them selling £400+ Best goods £420-£450 mediums £340-£400 and Smalls £250-£300. Blue heifers sold to average £290 with mainly young/ small calves in and trading between £260-£300 and mediums £300-£350. Sim Bulls sold away well with top price of £405. Older 8 week plus goods £340-£405 and younger end £220-260.

Great sale today with cows looking well in the new ring, and plenty of buyers who came out for increased numbers - more needed to meet demand.

Trade topped at £2550 for a fresh heifer from the Ravensgate herd of Pete Baul with the next top of £2520 Aireburn Charley Aldina from Brian Moorhouse backed by 11 gens VG or EX making a lovely pair heading to The Hartley’s just up the road. 13 heifers and cows sold to average £1913 with five at £2000 and above, Messrs Petch averaged £2150 for their pair and John Thompson had a black correct wearing heifer to £2200 the pick of Messrs Dinadale, Barnoldswick with his trio averaging £1900 while regular vendor Robert Crisps fresh heifer was third top price at £2400, one of three heading to the Goodall family at Tong. With buyers and sellers again from near and far supporting the sale - thanks go to them and demand continues for all classes, breeds and ages both in the ring and privately.

572 Breeding and Store Sheep

A duller day in the sky and some buyers bidding a bit more cautious. More younger lambs coming forward and some vendors coming to their end draws of the early lambers. Ewes with singles topped at £210 from CM Ryder who also sold ewes with twins at £270, £260. Ewes with twins £260-£285 for the pure bred ewes with smart lambs. Mules with twins sold between £200-£230 with a few old outfits just below the mark. Beltex with twins up to £295. Suffolks with twins £250-£270 for the strong ewes with young/ mediums lambs with a few working condition correct ewes £185-£230. Young ewes from JW Hardcastle at £280 an outfit for twins and singles at £190 for 3 crop ewes.
