**FULL PRESS REPORT **
Yearsley Angus bull claims 2,000gns top at CCM Skipton Native Day fixture.
Top price of 2,000gns (£2,100) at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Craven Native Day show and sale fell to a 13-month-old pedigree Aberdeen-Angus bull from Adrian and Penny Johnson’s Yearsley herd, based at Clarence House Farm in the village of the same name near Brandsby, in North Yorkshire’s Hambleton district. (Wed, May 5)
The well-grown Yearsley Royal Lion, a Rawburn Jackson Eric son bred from Yearlsey Royal Lady, one of the herd’s best cow families – Lion’s grandmother made 11,000gns – found a new home in Calderdale with Robert Gemmell, of Bradshaw, Halifax.
Hereford bulls sold to 1,500gns for the second prize show class winner consigned from the Stoner pedigree herd of Calderdale father and daughter, Brian and Lauren Boulton, based at Stones Farm, Wainstalls, Halifax.
Their Stoner 1 Spice Rack, a June, 2019, AI son of Gouldingpoll 1 Gold Spice, bred from a Dendor 1 Keepsake cow with very good EBVs (estimated breeding values) – Dendor is a renowned Welsh herd – was claimed by W&S Airey, of Whittington, Carnforth.
Best of the females also at 1,500gns was a December, 2019, roan Beef Shorthorn heifer from Johnathan Allison Farms, which runs the Appleton Mill pedigree herd at Appleton-le-Moors in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire.
Appleton Gela Inetta, a sweet naturally reared heifer sired by Stonehills Kracker Jack, out of a dam by Appleton Magic Kiery, travelled to Cumbria with M Robinson, of Barrows Green, south of Kendal, who purchased all three Appleton Mill females on offer. The other two were also 2019-born, an Appleton Bacchus daughter making 1,050gns and a second by Kracker Jack 980gns.
Show judge Andrew Hughes, of Coley Herefords in Halifax, nominated a 2019 pedigree Beef Shorthorn bull from the Daggett family’s local Hartlington herd as his chosen champion and a 2019 Hereford female from Stephen Tate’s Blackwood herd in Easingwold as reserve champion, though both failed to meet vendor expectations in the sale ring.
The show a formed part of the Craven Native Day sale of 129 head, which also incorporated 108 feeding and five breeding cattle.
Very active competition was seen ringside for the stores, grazing sorts well away, with pens of Luing-cross Galloway young yearling grazers making £685 and over year Luings from the same home realising £930.
Aberdeen-Angus feeding bullocks sold to £1,280 for two pens of solid dairy-breds from regular Coniston Cold consignees, David and Jackie Coates, with other strong feeders trading in the £1,190-£1,230 region.
Hereford bullocks sold to £1,080 for MR&VL Parsons, of Settle, Angus young grazers at £810-£950 for yearling to 14-month goods. Angus heifers sold at £1,000-£1,080 for feeders, £800-£900 for grazers and some seven-month old entries at £630-£660. A run of Longhorn-cross feeding bulls with some tremendous weight sold well at £1,140, medium bulls from the same farm at £920-£800.
There were plenty of buyers ringside for bullocks and heifers in the 8-15 month age range and the usual purchasers out for 16 month-plus goods paying prices seen on a regular basis at CCM Skipton. Full details of the sale are at www.ccmauctions.com
