Feeding Bulls
Trade for feeding bulls very good with the bulk of the entry Continental cross and 12 months or approaching 12 months of age. Bulls 12 months and over averaged £1273 and bulls under 11 months averaged £1168. Well drawn batches sold particularly well driven by the need to fill pens, The shapey end of the bulls under 12 months were £1300 to £1680 and heavier bulls over 12 months £1400 to £1600.
Feeding Cows
A very good enquiry for cows today, especially for the fleshed types with prices strong, topped at £2000 for the 1st prize Continental cow shown by Ken Gamble of Easingwold. Limousin Cows topped at £1820 from R Holroyd of Wadsworth, who also sold one at £1780 followed at £1740 by Alan & Trevor Blades of Hawes. Other meat sorts £1400 to £1650. Medium cows to feed £1200 to £1400, whilst grazers or medium to long keep £1000 to £1200. Only 7 cattle sold in 3 figures which is to be expected when the overall selling average was a massive £1295 for 42 head. OTM Bullocks to £1900 and OTM Heifers to £1710 both from K Burton of Colne.
STORES
Bullocks: Young Cattle started the sale today and there was a heaving ringside of buyers looking for cattle to feed and graze. All Bullocks under 12mo averaged £1053, with a leading price of £1580 for an 11mo Limousin from Ronnie & June Dowie of Cleatop, Settle who also sold another similar age at £1250.
WP&B Walker Appletreewick were at the top of the prices selling a 12mo Limousin at £1500 with another form this home at £1290. M Bentham of Thornton, Bradford made £1340 of 12mo Pathanaise, S Horsfield of Mytholmroyd sold 11mo Limousin’s at £1300 and £1200. Continental Bullocks 10 to 12mo suitable for grazing generally £1000 to £1100, a few smaller or younger pens in the £900’s. Young Angus Bullocks a keen enquiry seeing MP Tyson selling two pens of 4 at 11mo old for £1050 and £1040, DB&SA Ogden Worth Valley a pen of 4 at £1000 each at 11mo old.
12mo to 17mo Bullocks averaged £1059 with several runs of Dairy Blue’s within this bracket. £1300 was the lead price for a Lim Blue cross at 15mo from GT Booth of Lothersdale another similar age at £1230, and £1260 for a 13mo Lim form R Holroyd of Wadsworth. David & Harry Coates of Coniston Cold sold a run of 16mo Dairy Blues at £1220/£1225, Gordon Edward of Padiham made £1210 of 13mo Limousin cross and G&R Bulmer £1200 of a 13mo Limousin. Other commercial Suckler cross types just over a year old £1050 to £1180, and dairy crosses 13mo/17mo £1000 to £1150 depending on quality.
Older Bullocks 18mo and over were generally dairy crosses, leading at £1480 for a pair of strong Blues from DT&LA Houseman Dacre. JR Taylor Winterburn made £1445, MW Harrison Elslack £1430 and £1370, whilst David & Harry Coates £1390 and £1380 with more Dairy Blue crosses at 20mo. Keith Downs Carleton and R&R Holmes Crossroads made £1380 (18mo) and £1370 (21mo) of similar bred sorts. Bullocks 18mo plus averaged £1251.
Heifers: Those under a year old averaged just shy of £1000, with a tremendous run of 10mo/11mo Lim Blue crosses from KA&HL Fawcett & Son Barden lighting up the trade early on at £1580 £1340 £1300 £1200 £1180x2. Other chief prices for 10/12mo heifers saw K&J Marshall Skipton make £1140, S Horsfield £1140 and £1100 followed by WI&AM Atkinson with a pen of 4 Limousin 11/12mo at £1100. A nice sort for feeding generally £1000 plus, whilst younger sorts for grazing mainly £850 to £950, odd ones a shade less.
Jeff Pickles sold the pick of the 12mo/17mo heifers at £1510, with Geiff Booth Lothersdale getting amongst the prices at £1490 and £1280 at just over a year old. G&R Bulmer made £1490 and £1340 of retail quality types whilst a run of Limousins from Clark Farms, Ringinglow topped at £1400 for a pair of Lim crosses. A few runs of Dairy crosses from around £900 to £1050 depending upon quality, a few making towards £1100 for better sorts. This age group averaged £1109.
Strong Heifers 18mo plus saw top end £1300 to £1540 tops from B Mellin Bracewell. F&A Walmsley Blackburn made £1530 and Clark Farms £1500 of a pair of Limousins. JB&AH Coates Cowan Bridge made £1450 and Messrs Coates Stainforth the same of stronger Continentals. Thor Atkinson Ulverston was close behind at £1440 and £1420. Stronger Angus Heifers to £1290 from M Ryder & Son, older Dairy Blues with flesh to £1360 and £1330 from N&J Thwaite Hellifield, followed by £1295 from JGE Heseltine Bolton Abbey. All Heifers 18mo plus averaged £1172.
