Market Report
Feeding Bulls – Opening Sale of Feeding Bulls saw a reduced entry due to smaller numbers of specialist beef cows nationally. Any concerns about increasing feed cost in 2022 temporarily receded because of the need to fill pens with first draw bulls from regular consignees at this time of year. The feeding bull average of £1207 was up £200 on the 2021 average of £1017. Bulls under 10 months averaged £1111 with the best in the section a homebred Limousin at £1490 from TH Mellin. Bulls under 12 months averaged £1345 headed at £1580 by a February born British Blue bred from a Limousin cow shown by JC Walker & Son. Bulls over 12 months averaged £1325 with the best a 25 month old at £1800 from J Pickles.
The price increase was most apparent in the 400kg bulls but at the younger end of the entry very few forward creep fed. April bulls slipped under £1000 with most knocking at the door of £1100. A very good trade reflected an excellent entry of high quality bulls selling to many returning buyers buying the same consignments that they’ve bought for years.
Feeding Cows – Cows a sharp trade with more liveweight lean cows in the entry than normal. Fed continental cows £1200-1490, fed native cows £1100. Small lean continental cows £550 to £750 depending on age and scope for improvement. One or two buyers remain absent after holidays as the backlog of finished cows on farm is slow to clear.
Stores – A solid entry of store cattle forward today attracting extra buyers’ ringside with plenty of positivity about with bullocks averaging £1140 across all breeds and ages, and heifers £1036 for the same. Trade was especially good for the younger end with these seeing an excellent enquiry, this highlighted by a run of 50 Char X Blks and Hfrs at 7 months old from Fleets Farms sold to avg £905, Blks sold from £900-£1040 and heifers all from £790-£890 in this run.
Older Cattle in general saw the edge just be off the mid range commercial feeding cattle with prime prices under pressure during the last week. Under 12-month suckler bred Limousins were good to sell with sweet ended heifers selling to regular purchasers to grow on. Plenty in the £850-£1000 range with the better end either side of £1100, with the slightly older goods selling to feed reaching the £1100-£1220. Size and power for good ended retail spec cattle sold well with JR&DL Ogden, Clapham selling a heifer with a thick end and loin to £1500. Other good retail heifers with a nice warming of flesh and thickness £1250-£1350 generally with some pens exceeding this range. Leaner Lim cattle sold at £1090-£1180.
Under 12-month-old Blks sold up to £1240 from S Horsfield, Hebden Bridge. Others selling between £950 £1100 for nice making Blks. Native cattle meeting regular demand with Williamson Bros, Ulverston selling strong Angus Steers to £1380 and KM& L Throup, Silsden selling at £1350, £1310. Size and frame £1200-£1300 with lean feeders £1000-£1120. Grazing goods £820-£900 with a few a plainer goods a touch less, the breed average for Angus sired Bullocks was £1100 today.
Angus heifers sold to £1260 from H Downs & Son, Skipton. Again, feeders selling at £990-£1090 and full meat goods reaching either side of £1200.
