Feeding Bulls – Today saw the first big show of 2020 born cattle with numbers up on the year and a £40 per head increase in average price on the year for Continentals to average £1017. With some exceptional runs of cattle, the pick of the January born bulls was a Limousin from Jeff Pickles, Far Gearstones at £1350, closely followed by a very good pen of Continental Bulls from K&GJ Huck of Sowerthwaite Farm headed by two February Continentals at £1340. 350kg bulls proved a very good trade throughout with a good number at the premium end at £1050 plus for bulls born March and April.

Feeding Cows – Increased entry for the opening sale with more first dairy crosses in the mix. A pure limousin from M Crabtree made £1350, whilst S Horsfield also made £1350 of a continental and JR&DL Ogden topped the sale at £1380 for a Limousin cross. The heavier end of the remainder of the entry were £940-£1260 if carrying finish.

Stores – Cattle on fire today with purchasers ringside for all classes of breed and quality. Short term Continental Heifers really took the lead early on with purchasers there for both finishing and breeding competing for the U+E Grades. JC Nelson & Son, Bull & Cave lead the trade of the day early on with a single Lim heifer making £1620 followed by another Limousin making £1550, both being 14-15 month old. Smart Lim E grade heifers with style sold £1300+ from start to finish. A tremendous run from E & AM Simpson sold char heifers in-between £1140-£1320. D+C Newhouse sold his Blue heifers at £1410-£1430. Dairy bred blue heifers with size and power £1100-£1180 slightly younger or not as fleshed goods £1040-£1080.
Suckled Heifer Calves were keenly sought with Charollais Heifers from Fleets Farms Annual Consignment of 8 month olds in the £800’s. Heifers under 10mo old topped £1180 for a Limousin from RS Harker & Son Grayrigg Hall whilst 11mo heifers hit £1360 and £1220 from RP Holt Ivy House Farm.

Steers - B+W steers sold to £950 from H Downs & Son and D Beck selling his at £920. Size £900-£950 Size but plainer goods with more time needed to finish £850-£900 and plainer end £790.
Native cattle selling to their usual premiums. RP Holt £1290 for a big Bullock followed by B Mellin at £1175 and K&ML Throup at £1160. Large Hereford bullock from Alan Thompson Farms sold to £1200.
NJ & SJ Pinder sold Blonde bullocks to £1270. Older feeding Blondes £1190-£1270. 12 month goods with ends in them £880-£1060. Char Bullocks £1440 from P & E Fox. Best Lim Steers £1300-£1450 from several vendors selling to a full range buyers. £1200-£1300 for the next grade, a touch smaller, still short keep goods with just a little less power.
Young bullocks 7 to 10 months saw fresh weaned Blonde bullocks in the £740-£820 depending on frame, whilst the consignment of Charolais crosses 8mo old from Fleets Farms saw two large pens jointly top at £990 each. S Horsfield of Mytholmroyd sold a 10mo smart bullock at £1100.
