Jean Price lands championship hat-trick at Skipton Jacob highlight The Welsh-based Pentrenant flock of Jean Price in Churchstoke, Powys, achieved a memorable hat-trick at the Northern Area Jacob Sheep Breeders’ 39th annual show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart.

Rhode Island Reds head Craven Feather Auctions pecking order Rhode Island Red poultry breeder Trevor Hardaker, of Lower Dunsforth, between Boroughbridge and York, was champion with three 22-week-old point of lay pullets at the Craven Feather Auctions summer show and sale of poultry and waterfowl at Skipton Auction Mart.

Grisedale Herdwick sheep champion at Skipton native breeds highlight A Herdwick gimmer shearling from Ian and Angela Grisedale, of Green Mount Farm, Crooklands, Kendal, was champion in the sheep show classes at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Rare & Native Stock Breeders Auctions of rare, minority and traditional breeds of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.

Fisher nets Skipton Wensleydale championship North Yorkshire Wensleydale pedigree sheep breeder Andrew Fisher, of Well House, Low Laithe, Harrogate, was supreme champion at the 123rd annual show and sale for the Wensleydale Longwool Sheep Breeders’ Association at Skipton Auction Mart.

STORE CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 27TH AUGUST 2014

Forward: 382 head of cattle Comprising: 43 Young Feeding Bulls, 324 Bullocks & Heifers, 14 Breeding Cattle & 1 Grazing Cow Another busy Summer sale and a roaring trade all round from start to finish, with the last pen in the sale ring being 3 Charollais Heifers from Arthur Ward of Grantley scooping the £15 Prize for the highest priced pen of 3 or more when selling for £1100 each. Generally trade was very much along the lines of the previous sale, there were plenty of cattle with age and power and more cattle at 4 figure prices than has been seen for several months. As usual a very good selection of native bred and dairy bred bullocks (85 Head) were among the entry and prices saw Angus sired Bullocks top at £1230 and Dairy Bred at £1000 for a pair of Mont Beliarde from Andrew Fawcett.

MARKET REPORT - Monday 25th August 2014 Dairy

90 Rearing Calves to £450 B&W av £52.35 Cont av £303.14 Native av £145 Good show of calves considering the show the previous week. With plenty of calves and a bank holiday crowd trade was buoyant. Calves were not quite as flash as the week before particularly Black and Whites with some selling calves too young and under fleshed, but any on the money and just either side of a month old were snaffled up by a number of buyers and would go well into the £80’s. The best black and white was shown by Messrs Atkinson of Bishop Thornton reaching the heights of £135 for a well fleshed Holstein Friesian calf.

Swires bag back-to-back Craven Dairy Auction championships Back-to-back championships were bagged at Skipton Auction Mart’s main August Craven Dairy Auction by commercial breeders, father and son Malcolm and Robert Swires, of Haverah Park, Beckwithshaw.

BREEDING SHEEP - FRIDAY 22ND AUGUST 2014

CCM Auctions held the special august sale of breeding sheep (2shr +) and rams at Skipton Auction on Friday the 22nd where a useful entry of 1032 ewes and 18 rams were forward for sale. Several runs of young sheep were highly sought after with 44 different purchasers successful on the day. Thomas Binns, Downham presented his annual consignment of 2shr ewes selling at £148, £146 and £144 each. Martyn Jennings sold ewes as part f a major reduction and 2 crop mules topped at £144, homebred texel 2 crop ewes at £140 and homebred Suffolk x 2 crop ewes at £138. Older sheep were also in strong demand with customers looking for early tupping ewes.

STORE LAMBS - WEDNESDAY 20TH AUGUST 2014

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs Forward: 6828 Head, Overall av £55.69 At CCM Auctions fortnightly sale of store lambs on Wednesday, there was a much larger entry of 6828 head. A feature of the sale was a sizeable entry of 1480 Mule wethers, drawing a larger contingent of buyers from away to secure the first draw of lambs off those farms showing. The stronger Mules were £52 - £58, averaging £51.91 per head.

SHEARLING GIMMERS - TUESDAY 19TH AUGUST 2014

Forward: 4,019 head of Shearling Gimmers CCM Auctions conducted their Great Annual Prize Sale of Gimmer Shearlings at Skipton on Tuesday. Sheep were shown in fine fettle and trade was slightly better on the year, with the overall selling average rising by £7.53 on the year. In the morning the prize show for Mules was judged by Mr Andrew Ogden of Cowling and Mr Warwick Gill, Melton Mowbray. This year the Edgar Boothman Trophy for the best pen of Mule shearlings was awarded to Mr John Greenhalgh of Bashall Eaves. They later sold at £215 each to Mr Gill. The second prize pen from Peter & Edward Fox of Clitheroe achieved the same price and went to the same purchaser.

MARKET REPORT - MONDAY 18TH AUGUST 2014 DAIRY

94 Rearing Calves to £700 B&W av £71.98 Cont av £389.8 Native av £188.7 Skipton Calf show was once again a huge success with a large ringside of buyers making a fantastic trade in all sectors with a trade not seen since the spring. Once again the Sowray Family of Bishop Thornton struck gold with a fantastic Blue Bull at 41 Days old making a record breaking £700, Yes that’s right and heading its way to the east coast. Other noted vendors were the Houseman’s of Burton Leonard and Colin Whitelock of Gargrave both making big prices with some fantastic continental calves.
