Prime Sheep
Another nice entry of sheep for sale today, and although lambs were less money on the week, an overall Skipton Mart average of 197.2p/kg or £83 per head represents a very good result on the day with the GB countrywide average settling at 191p.
The heavier retail and wholesale butchers lambs again found a good following, top price per head of £116 achieved by JR Taylor & Son, Winterburn for Texels selling to Worsley Wholesale Butchers. Messrs DA&SA Fort Glusburn made £115 of Texels, this time purchased by J&E Medcalf Ltd. Next highest price at £114 for Texels was paid to JB Hacking Clitheroe by L Wood & Sons Scammonden, whilst RJ Lambert Wigglesworth made £110 per head for Continentals, and JR Taylor made £110 with a second pen of Texels. Vendors with Lambs at £109 were TH Mellin Black Lane ends and GH Emmott Steeton. 50 pens of lambs on the day making £100 or more.
Top price per kilo was 260p/kg, paid to B Spensley Ltd Thorlby for 40kg Beltex crosses purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. Other better lambs on the day mainly 230p to 240p/kg.
Heavier lambs were good to sell all day, and were short of buyers requirements, whilst the smart skinned ¾ Continental lambs were quickly bid for and most of these were 210p to 225p, regardless of weight. Heavy first cross lambs were generally above £2, with the 46kg to 52kg weight bracket averaging a strong 211p/kg or £101.12 per head.
Handyweight lambs 40kg-42kg needed to be the smarter sorts to make over £2, whilst a commercial type of Continental was around 190p and Suffolk Mules in the 180’s, but a lighterweight lamb (37kg to 39kg) was in comparision in good demand generally 5p/kg more.
A slightly smaller show of Cast sheep were still a decent trade, peaking at £120.50 for Continentals, other nice ewes from mid 80’s to just over £100. Better Mules mid to late 70’s, and Swales into the mid 60’s for good types, and 50’s for nice lean meat ewes. Overall selling average of £70.28 for Ewes and Rams.
Today we held our July Primestock show and a strong line up of lambs went before Mr H Bosworth who undertook judging duties for the day. He selected 5 Texel crosses weighing 46kg from Rob Marshall of Harrogate as the champion pen, and these sold for £106 per head to Vivers Scotlamb, who also purchased the 2nd prize pen form David & Laura Coar of Darwen for £97.50. Ellis Bros from Addingham were 3rd in class with 44kg making £99 to Brayton Farm Shop. In the down cross category, Messrs Frankland Farms took first prize with 39kg’s making £88 each. Thanks to all vendors and buyers for their support at this months event.

A quiet show of calves this Monday but a straight trade throughout the sale with best prices received for Bull calves particularly Aberdeen Angus and British Blue with a 4 ½ week old Angus from Stephen Marshall of West End selling to £275 and a shapely British Blue from RLWright & Son, Airton selling to £410.
Throughout it was a show of calves that just lacked the quality of previous weeks despite this a nice trade was received for the majority with a lot of young calves showing potential making good money.

A handy show of dairy cattle for this morning’s show & sale, pre sale judge Shaun Sowray went about his work quickly and efficiently picking a cracking heifer from the Lawson family of Arthington as his Champion and closely followed by a super grafeeti daughter bred by Brian and Judith Moorhouse of Hesper Farm, Bell Busk. These two heifers would be the envy of most farmers and quickly made their way to the top two prices of the day. Newbirks Crest Jazz a cracking heifer bred by Lawson’s homebred bull Newbirks Crest and boasting 38litres of milk was vigorously bid for with the hammer eventually falling at £2500 to AL Dean & Son of Threshfield. Aireburn Grafeeti Dellia the Reserve Champion, by the renowned Ladys-Manor RD Grafeeti, who herself was giving 32kg again found the eye of Angus Dean this time selling for £2450. The Third prize heifer presented by Richard and Andrew Walker of East Morton, a lovely wearing heifer giving 35kg sold away nicely eventually selling for £1850 to Mark Goodall of Tong.
A run of Incalf heifers from two vendors were highlighted by the 1st Prize heifer from J Roberts, Huddersfield, due to AA at the end of July, a stylish black heifer sold for £1520 to Will Shuttleworth of Rylstone.
