Hogg numbers on the increase again today, and the trade was better than many, including us, had anticipated, an overall average for all breeds, weights, and grades was 187.6p/kg was the end result.
Increasing uncertainty and turmoil in the Eurozone has resulted in the £-Euro exchange rate rising 4 cents from the middle of last week alone, trading opening at 1.346Euro to £1 on Monday morning, which is not helping exports from the UK, causing our lamb to look dearer to foreign customers. Export led buyers were understandably quieter today and this class of lamb saw a fall on the week with the 36kg to 45kg bracket down 7.4p/kg on the week.
There were some excellent lambs on offer today, Ellis Bros lead the way with 40kg Beltex at £116 each or 290p, the same vendor also achieving 271.1p. Paul Simpson showed his usual good run of lambs, topping at 273.1p, whilst Sarah Eddleston had 271.9p.
Heavy lambs didn’t match last weeks flyer, this weight category showing a 10p fall on the week, however 50kg plus lowland lambs were generally £92 to £94, Ralph & Val Crabtree topping the section at £110 with Beltex’s weighing 46kg.
Mule lambs were a couple of £ cheaper, the Mule lamb average down 4p on the week to 177p, the general trade for 43kg to 46kg was £33 to £35 over the weight.
Over 700 Mule & Horned lambs were in today’s entry, and lightweight Horned Wethers proved good to cash, with ethnic trade helping push most nice 34kg to 35kg weights to £60 or just over.
Cast sheep trade again proved good, with an average for ewes of £84 for ewes and £94 for rams recorded.

Craven Dairy Auction (15 head)
A stronger ringside of buyers with a good portion ringside on lookers competing hard for milkers though a few heifers struggled to breach the £1800 barrier. The champion another sweet heifer from Peter Baul of Watergate farm, Bishop Thornton and first in the ring set the tone for the day ending up at £2000 which was bought by Mr Williams of Cheshire. Reserve Champion from Brian Moorhouse managed to do one better with a Windbrook Daughter giving 32 kgs and reached the top price of the day of £2020 to Mr Williams again.
