4,254 Prime Sheep comprising 3,749 Spring Lamb, 505 Cast Sheep (475 Ewes & 30)Rams
A very large entry of 4254 sheep penned and sold today, with lambs levelling at a very respectable 174.5p/kg for a very mixed selection (last week 177p), and 505 Cast Sheep (comprising 475 ewes and 30 rams) averaging £53.58 each.
Lambs were very much as expected, the smart ¾ bred types were dearer on the week and very much in demand with buyers keen. Heavy lambs also found a fair following, with the 1174 lambs 46kg and above averaging 174p, just 2p down on the week. Its worth noting though that anything which had been fed and consequently well finished was keenly competed for and received a sharp trade on the day, but buyers are not as keen now for a commercial grass fed lamb and these would be cheaper on the week.
Ellis Bros of Addingham Moorside topped the sale at 255.7p (44kg £112.50) with 5 Beltex crosses purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. The same vendor also made 237p (43kg £102) for another pen of 5 Beltex crosses, also 233p (45kg £105) and 225p (43kg £97).
David & Laura Coar, Darwen topped the market per head at £117 for 46kg Beltex crosses which were the 2nd highest per kilo at 254.3pkg again purchased by Vivers Scotlamb.
Tom Hill & Ruby Wright made their usual trip to Skipton from Doncaster with a nice consignment of lambs, the best of which were 253.5p (43kg £109).
George Sunderland from Cragg Vale presented the champion pen of lambs at todays September Show & Sale which was kindly judged by Mr Nick Dalby of Hartwith. His pen of 5 Beltex’s made 248.9p (44kg £109.50) selling to £109.50.
JG Hall & Son, Gargave had a great run up to 246.4p (42kg £103.50) and 236p (43kg £101.50) and 230.5p (43kg £99), whilst also making £107.50 of a pen of 49kg Texels.
N&AD Boynton, Ripon were in the prices with 235.9p (46kg £108.50) who also made £116 of 53kg Continental crosses and £110 each for a pen of 5 Beltex crosses to Hartshead Meat Co.
PR Simpson Calder Farm made 233.8p (40kg £93.50).
JC Marshall, Dacre was up to £109 for 52kg Texels selling to retail butchers Kendalls of Harrogate and Pateley Bridge.
Top price longwool lamb was at Teeswater from CW Marwood & Son, Whenby selling at £105 to W Rathmell.
A large show of Cast sheep found a very good following and sold to a very competitive average of £53.58 per head, tops at £127.50 for a Texel Ram from Richard Wilson of Crimple Head, Beckwithshaw and Ewes to £110.50 from the same vendor. Ben Townsend from Laneshawbridge also made £102.50 of Texel crosses, as did Peter Simpson of Calder Farm.
