Spring Lambs: A mixed entry were sold away to the usual compliment of buyers but prices were not as strong as last week, with heavier lambs being harder to place.

Prime & Lightweight Hoggs: Trade was generally dearer, especially the lightweights and mainstream export weights which were keenly contested and some being 10p up on the week. The SQQ range which is only up to 45.5kg (this is what some other centres refer to as their “SQQ overall average”) for ease of comparison levelled at 208.4p/kg, whilst the OVERALL AVERAGE for every hogg sold rose by 8p/kg on the week to 197.6p.

Heavy hoggs were generally a very similar trade, although some runs of nice types were better to sell. The very smart Beltex types were good to sell as is usual for this centre, with 5 pens managing to top £3/kilo, H Baines selling two pens, RL&AR Phillips, Henry Atkinson and PW Simpson one pen each.

Cast sheep were as predicted and trade was on a high note with 288 Ewes averaging £91.34 and 15 cast rams averaged £101.43.

There were 135 Sheep with 227 lambs at foot forward for today’s weekly sale. A useful entry drew a huge bank holiday crowd of buyers and young sheep were again extremely well bid for and many more could have been sold. A Fantastic Bank Holiday trade for calves this Monday with British Blue calves being the pick of the day with trade topping at £600 twice both from Fred and Mark Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises with a blue bull and blue heifer one heading east and one south.  Other vendors received as good a trade with Booths of Lothersdale making £530 and £520. Black and white calves were also a serious trade with a good show of quality averaging £93.13.

A great day with buyers again expected to be out in force on dairy day next week.
