3,590 Prime Sheep comprising 3057 Spring Lamb, 533 Cast Sheep (530 Ewes, 3 Rams)
Plenty of sheep on offer today with 3,590 presented for sale and trade as expected was harder work. Again buyers showing a willingness to give a definite premium for lambs that have received some hard feed as against just grass fed sorts, this was very evident for the handy weighted types, where 40/41kg types were 10p/15p dearer for having been fed.
A few runs of smart handyweight lambs in the 220p to 250p region, nice sorts 190/210, plenty 170/185, but plain lambs similar to store price with buyers discounting these from a slaughter point of view. Best butchers type heavies were £100 to £110, and the nice sorts in the £90’s, commercial heavies in the £80’s. Overall average of 166p/kg or
Messrs Boynton from Ripon topped the trade again with Continentals at £113 each selling to Vivers Scotlamb and £106 to Robertshaw’s Farmshop in Thornton. Kevin Huck from Bordley made £109 to Vivers Scotlamb, Jim Greenwood from Addingham made £107 to Hartshead Meat Co, Mossley.
A nice trade for ewes with the overall average up some £8 on the week. Best ewes into 3 figures,

106 calves entered and penned for this morning’s sale. Trade today was not quite as potent as the week before as a result of a few extra numbers and with a few less faces ringside. Best calves reached £380 for a super Charollais x bull from C Smith of Sutton in Craven and £370 for a 4 week old British Blue bull from Joss Lancaster, Horton in Craven.
Aberdeen Angus’s founded a couple of fresh bidders today with a bull average of £238 and a top of £340 for a stonking bull from Smith’s of Carlerton. Aberdeen Angus heifers averaged £138 and topped with Rob Wallbank, Embsay at £180.
Black and whites would be slightly less money this week however the best Holstein bulls were up to £85 for a strong bull from RL Wright & Son of Airton.
