BREEDING SHEEP - MONDAY 1ST APRIL 2019

Breeding Sheep – 129 Ewes with 196 Lambs A nice show of sheep with Continental and Suffolk cross ewes with nice lambs at foot in high demand, twins £200 to £225, singles £140 to £175, twins at £225 RJ Umpleby, Killinghall also £225 and £220 DP Moore, Triangle, Sowerby Bridge. Mule sheep were a mixed selection, with a shortage of best types and Mule outfits definitely benefit from lambs being just a shade older. Top Mule sheep £200 for Shearling Twins from David White Hebden.

Henry’s hoggs on a high at CCM Skipton prime lambs show As anticipated, trade for the 2,914 prime hoggs penned for sale at Skipton Auction Mart’s latest Monday sale took a very nice lift on the week to level at 210p/kg across the board, or £95.31 per head, with an SQQ average of 222p/kg. Similar numbers the previous week sold to an overall average of £90.32, or 198.1p/kg (SQQ 210.6p).

Barden Fawcetts claim CCM Skipton prime cattle victory A ten-month-old heifer by a British Blue stock bull, Heather View Jack, out of a beef-cross Brown Swiss suckler cow, was crowned champion at Skipton Auction Mart’s April prime cattle show and sale, the annual Easter fixture. (Mon, April 1) It was consigned by father and son, John and Joe Fawcett, of Dale Head Farm, Barden. Weighing in at 535kg, the victor sold for the day’s top per kilo price of 269.5p, or £1,442, to retail butcher George Cropper Jnr for his Sandersons Butchers shop in Manchester Road, Baxenden.

Harehills heifers champion and reserve at Craven Dairy Auction A brace of newly calven Holstein Friesian heifers from Sally Wellock, who runs the Harehills pedigree herd at West House Farm, Oldfield, Keighley, bagged principal honours at the second March Craven Dairy Auction at Skipton Auction Mart. (Monday, March 15) The three weeks-calved 26-litre victor, Harehills Girlish 87, by the Genus sire, Farnear Ayres, sold for £1,600, while the 23 days-calved 28-litre reserve champion. Harehills Lobelia 757, by another Genus sire, Luncrest Millard, made £1,500. Both joined regular local buyer John Howard, of Heslaker,

EWE & LAMB PRESS - MONDAY 25TH MARCH 2019

Thompson first prize twosome top on price at Skipton ewes with lambs opener Skipton Auction Mart’s opening ewes with lambs show of the season attracted over 50 show pens and produced a top price of £380 per outfit for the first prize pen of pairs from Anthony Thompson and Emma Dalby, of Higher Broach Farm, Foulridge. Their home-bred pure black Beltex shearling ewes with single ram lambs – one black, one white - sold to Dacre’s Rob Marshall.(Mon, March 25)

DAIRY & CALVES - MONDAY 25TH MARCH 2019

Rearing Calves to £390 x5 (52) B&W av £72 Cont av £335 Native av £305 Another handy turnout of calves considering show week last week. Calves saw a healthy ringside of buyers with some good prices throughout the sale. Despite not breaking £400 this morning there was a rake of 12 calves £370 to £390 from the likes of Joss Lancaster, Mike Longster, John Marshall and Hartley’s of Bolton Abbey. Blue heifers were in a higher gear too this morning with an improved average of £313 and topping at £360 again from Joss Lancaster.

734 Breeding Sheep – 256 Ewes & 478 Lambs A large show of sheep with lambs, and the smart Continentals were a strong trade on the day, being the easiest types to sell. Good outfits with month old lambs finding £220 plus for twins. Mules needed big lambs too for a strong trade, but thise with younger lambs found the going tough at times. Our thanks to Ryan Staveley for judging todays early show and he gave out the following awards, with the first prixe pair from AL Thompson topping the trade at £380 per outfit. Thomas Boothman had a great run which produced the first prize pen of 5 at £270.

YOUNG BULL PRESS - WEDNESDAY 20TH MARCH 2019

Brian Lund lands red rosette and top call at CCM Skipton young bulls highlight Brian Lund, of Walshaw Farm, Walshaw, Hebden Bridge, claimed another red rosette and £1,200 top price when sending out the 10-12 months victor at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Spring show and sale of young feeding bulls. (Wed, March 20) The mart regular won with a home-bred British Blue-cross bull by Rhymill Intoxicate, acquired from Welsh breeder Rhys Millichap, which has also produced past prize winners at Skipton for the Calderdale breeder. Out of a three-quarters Blue cow, Mr Lund’s latest frontrunner fell to multiple annual buyer York farmer and butcher Anthony Swales.

CALVES - MONDAY 18TH MARCH 2019

Rearing Calves to £450 (104) B&W av £76.57 Cont av £322.5 Native av £192.5 Spring calf show this morning with a nice show of 108 calves this morning with 85% of the calves British Blue sired or Black and White bulls. In the pre-sale show a tremendous British Blue bull from Hartley’s of Bolton Abbey was picked out as Champion by the Judge Tony Binns. The champion topped a very strong show of blue bulls with 12 of the entry over £400 peaking with the champion from Hartley’s at £450.

CALF PRESS - MONDAY 18TH MARCH 2019

Hartleys a big hit with Skipton Spring calf show victor and top price Alan Middleton, who trades under the family partnership of JP&KE Hartley at Lane House Farm, Beamsley, was champion with a six-week-old British Blue-cross bull at Skipton Auction Mart’s second rearing calf show of 2019. (Monday, March 19) By a Genus Fertility Plus sire, out of a Holstein Friesian cow, the home-bred victor, shown by Duncan Holme, progressed to land the day’s top price of £450 when claimed by Graham Stainthorpe, from Grewelthorpe, Ripon.
