Double prime champions coup at Skipton for Red Rose retail butcher Frankland Farms in Rathmell clinched a prime lambs championship and reserve championship double with a brace of Beltex-cross pens at Skipton Auction Mart’s August show and sale. (Mon, Aug 6) The frontrunners were shown by Richard Frankland and his son, Jon, who run the sheep operation at Frankland Farms, whose New Hall Farm will host NSA North Sheep in June next year.

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 455 head of cattle Comprising: 425 Feeding Cattle (55 Young Bulls, 21 Beef Feeding Cows, 364 Bullocks & Heifers) & 30 Breeding Cattle. Bulls sold to a reduced audience with trade in line with expectations. A few fresh Autumn born bulls now hitting the market and these are a respectable trade with U Grade potential stirks £850 to £1150 depending on weight. Scarcity of sound strong 13 – 15 month old bulls kept prices in the £1150 to £1300 range for the best.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Forward: 4,818 Head, Overall av £55.16 A much larger show of store lambs as the grazing situation brings more lambs onto the market to sell. Stronger lambs were a nice trade with feeders relatively keen as the prime sheep trade holds firm, suffolks especially finding a ready market. However a medium to long keep lamb was certainly more buyable with grass at a premium on most farms and making this class of lamb harder to place.

Dalesbrad dairy production sale sets 2,600gns top price A successful on-farm production sale of 171 pedigree Holstein dairy cattle from the Throup family’s well-known Dalesbrad herd was staged at Higher House Farm, Silsden Moor. (Friday, July 20) With cattle on the ground standing at an all-time high and buildings full to capacity, Allan and Susan Throup, and their son, Richard, decided it was time to reduce numbers and a tremendous crowd arrived ringside for the beginning of the sale.

Feeding Bulls easing in line with prime cattle trade and anticipated higher finishing costs, however todays sample was not quite representative of the usual strength and quality. Premium quality September born bull stirks £1100 + for K&GJ Huck, Austwick and £1200 for November born bulls for KA &HL Fawcett, Barden.

Craven Dairy Auction (11 head) A few extras to the catalogue were a welcome addition to a quiet show of milkers. A few less buyers present but still all heifers were sold by the end of the sale with 1st and 2nd prize heifers topping the sale at £1650 from Sally Wellock of Oakworth and Wilson Stewart, Carlisle respectively. Middle of the road heifers harder to place with future feed stocks beginning to become a concern despite farm gate price increases.

Harehills herd hat-trick at Craven Dairy Auction Sally Wellock’s Harehills pedigree Holstein Friesian herd at West House Farm, Oldfield, near Oakworth, rattled up a hat-trick of consecutive championship wins at July’s second Craven Dairy Auction show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Monday, July 16)

Heartening sale average at Skipton store lamb opener Skipton Auction Mart’s main sheep sale season got off to a flying start when the traditional pipe-opener for store lambs produced a heartening overall selling average of £61.52 per head. (Wednesday, July 11) This represented a fall of just £1.32 on the year, with a good crowd of buyers vying for the 2,126 lambs penned for sale. They were slightly stronger and in better condition than most would have expected, which certainly helped the day’s proceedings.
