Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Forward: 8,077 Head, Overall av £50.57 A more mixed show for quality at this weeks’ sale. Strong and smart lowland lambs were a decent trade most of the day, strongest best sorts into the late 60’s and mid 70’s, the 4th and 3rd last pens in the ring making £71.50 and £70.50, with more early to mid 60’s, whilst the strongest end of medium keep lambs were late 50’s towards £60. However there was then a drop to longer keep and more commercial types of lamb. Mule wethers were showing the time of year more than usual, better end over £50, longer keep types mid to late 40’s.

Richard Close at last gets his hands on coveted Skipton Dalesbred trophy Dyed-in-the-wool Dalesbred sheep farmer Richard Close, of Calf Hall Farm, Starbotton, was crowned champion at the annual Dalesbred Sheep Breeders’ Association’s final seasonal show and sale of shearling and aged rams, and females, at Skipton Auction Mart. A nice show of rams displaying plenty of power and bone were forward at Skipton on Tuesday for The Dalesbred Sheep Breeders Annual Sale. Achieving the top price of 300gns was a Shearling Ram from Richard Close and Family from Calf Hall Farm in Starbotton, Wharfedale. Sired by their Kelsall ram out of a Dawson got ewe, it attracted much interest and spirited bidding from the ringside before being knocked down and it finding a new home at Whitmoor Farm with Messrs V Verity and Son.

FORWARD: 2,467 Breeding Sheep & Gimmer Lambs. (2,386 Gimmer Lambs and 81 Dalesbred Sheep) CCM Auctions conducted their fortnightly sale of Gimmer Lambs at Skipton on Tuesday. A very mixed show of lambs for this fourth sale of the season saw an overall average of £61.04p for Mule gimmer lambs, very much in line with late season trade, and would be a straight go for the size of lambs that generally was on offer. Anything with that bit extra quality was quickly sold, but it is evident buyers are discounting plain and smaller lambs this year.

Gamble charity lamb makes top price at Skipton Ken and Hazel Gamble, of Brickyard Farm, Easingwold, were the latest farming family to donate a lamb at Skipton Auction Mart’s weekly Monday prime sheep sale in aid of national farming charity, the Addington Fund. (Mon, Oct 16)

CCM Auctions Conducted the Pedigree Sale of Charollais Females. A solid trade for quality types was seen at this years sale, with ewe lambs to 800gns, but averaging a wonderful £520.96. Shearling ewes rose to 1,200gns for the first in the ring from Messrs Marwood. (Full report to follow)

Trade hits all-time high at Skipton working sheep dogs highlight Ireland’s Michael Gallagher top dog with 9,500gns sale Unprecedented trade for field-run entries at Skipton Auction Mart’s autumn sale of working sheep dogs produced a top call of 9,500gns (£9,975) for an Irish dog with impeccable bloodlines, a second top price of 6,000gns for another Irish-bred bitch, three sales topping 5,000gns, four above 4,000gns, five exceeding 3,000gns and a further 18 at 2,000gns-plus. Paul and Mick team up for top price coup at CCM Autumn pedigree cattle highlight Cattle took centre stage at Skipton Auction Mart for the annual Autumn Pedigree Day, featuring shows for multi-breed beef breeding cattle and suckled bulls, steer and heifer calves, primarily 2017-born. (Wed, Oct 11) In the multi-breeds arena, top price of the day at 2,400gns fell to a 2016-born Limousin bull from Red Rose breeder Paul Fletcher, who runs his Siddall Limousin herd at Top O’Th Hill Farm, Birch, Heywood, and is a regular exhibitor at Skipton’s Spring and Autumn pedigree events.

Rams in demand at Skipton breeding sheep sale Skipton’ Auction Mart’s latest fortnightly Tuesday sale of 1,513 breeding sheep and rams saw the latter in particular meet a strong trade when achieving 85% clearance, with anything well framed and ready for immediate turn out finding a ready ringside of buyers. (Tues, Oct 10) A strong pen of Texel tups from Procters Farms in Tatham, Lancaster, sold to a sale high of 480gns for a brace of shearlings claimed by Ashley Thwaite, of Hellifield, and Addingham’s Johnny Greenwood. The same vendors also headed the ram lamb prices at 300gns

Forward: 89 Registered Swaledale Rams There was a similar entry to usual with 89 rams presented from a catalogue of 104. Rams were generally just not as strong as seen in previous years, but anything with that little bit of extra quality generally got away nicely and produced solid averages as below. Top price in sale was 1,500 for the first prize aged ram from Kevin Huck of Bordley. Bred by Messrs Emmott at Whitelees in Weardale, this 4 shear sold to Jeff Pickles, Ribblehead. The Champion made the 2nd highest price of 1,300 from Andrew Haggas of Otterburn, got by a Martin Sunter out of a ewe by an old homebred tup, it went up to Cumbria when purchased by Alan Birbeck of Nateby, Kirkby Stephen.
