CRAVEN NATIVE DAY - WEDNESDAY 2ND MAY 2018

CRAVEN NATIVE DAY Forward: 88 head of cattle Comprising: 5 Young Feeding Bulls, 72 Bullocks & Heifers, 9 Breeding Cattle & 2 Native Pedigree Cattle. The Special Spring Sale of Native Store Cattle was held at Skipton Mart on Wednesday. The majority of Cattle were either Beef Shorthorn or Angus sired, with the Shorthorn classes sponsored by Morrisons Plc. Taking the prize for the best pair of stores was noted breeder Gerald Turton of Upsall Castle farms late selling for £1035. The majority of cattle were yearlings or younger, 12-13 mo heifers up to £1050 from Nick Carlisle and a pen of 5 Angus Heifers 10mo selling at £810 from Joe Throup. A run of Shorthorn sired Heifers selling from £900 to £980 form Page Farms.

Rearing Calves to £455 (31) B&W av £88.73 Cont av £328.5 Native av £252.37 Quiet show of calves today but a healthy trade seen right through. Best prices were seen for black and whites calves with 6 different buyers bidding away freely for the goods on offer, best sorts from Wellock’s of Seat House were well fought over with their two straight Holstein Bulls at £180 and £160. A nice show of Aberdeen Angus calves met some fierce bidding with Michael Heron of Leeds and Paul & Janet Bolland of Airton on the receiving end with calves at £305 and £330 respectively.

Skipton Spring cattle shows well supported Skipton Auction Mart’s pedigree British Blue cattle showcase was staged alongside the fortnightly Wednesday store and breeding cattle sale, which attracted another solid turnout of 848 head, with large entries in all departments and a fast selling trade throughout. (Wed, Apr 25) It also featured Spring shows for store cattle and beef feeding cows. In the former, judged by Brad Thompson, of Middleton, Pickering, the red rosette-winning British Blue-cross heifer came from mart regular Brian Lund, from Walshaw, Hebden Bridge.

Craven Dairy Auction (4 head) A small show of dairy but those who attended would be glad they did. Mark Chadwick of Chadwick and Leaver, Burnley officiated and deemed Sammy Sugdens Zebra daughter the best in show today, the homebred heifer giving 28 litres went on to sell for the sale top price of £1980 selling to Richard Sutcliffe of Queensbury.

Sammy Sudgen dairy champion at Skipton While the fortnightly Craven Dairy Auction show and sale attracted a small turnout of newly calven heifers, these proved in ready demand at the ringside. (Mon, Apr 23) Champion was Sammy Sugden, who runs the Brontemoor pedigree herd at Dobfield Farm, Laycock, with her home-bred 18 days calved 28-litre heifer Brontemoor Zebra Sooty, by the Genus sire, Lynncrest Zebra, out of Grinkle Rollsroyce Sooty, which also headed the prices at £1,980 when claimed by regular dairy buyer Richard Sutcliffe, of Queensbury

CCM Skipton in positive mood for 2018 pedigree beef show season Skipton Auction Mart’s 2018 pedigree beef show and sale season begins next week on Wednesday, April 25, with the traditional pipe-opener, the annual ‘Blue Wednesday’ highlight. The fixture, which holds across-the-board interest for pedigree, commercial, beef and dairy breeders, has attracted a 14-strong turnout of 11 up-and-coming breeding bulls, the majority ready for work, along with a trio of breeding females.

BREEDING SHEEP - MONDAY 16TH APRIL 2018

630 Breeding Sheep (235 Sheep with 362 Lambs at foot, 33 Store Hoggs) Numbers steadily on the rise and more customers at the ringside as grass starts to appear, trade was up for the smart outfits by around £10-£15, older ewes with lambs £5-£10 dearer. Keep entries coming and pre-enter with office by 12noon Friday prior to sale for inclusion in catalogue listing, Thankyou. Today we held a show of sheep with lambs at foot, kindly judged by Mr N Tattersall.

CALVES - MONDAY 16TH APRIL 2018

Rearing Calves to £450 B&W av £59 Cont av £341 Native av £320 Well it seemed only british blues were on the menu this morning with 90% of the calves British blue on the passports. Top price calf of the day was the first one in the ring from John and Rob Marshall of Dacre when it sold for £450, Martyn Jennings of Cowling was next in line with another cracker at £430. British blue heifers averaged £280 however topped at £350 for an entry from Church Farm Enterprises and £330 for another strong calf from Martyn Jennings.
