SUMMER CALF SHOW - MONDAY 31ST JULY 2017

Sowrays champions again at Skipton rearing calf highlight The Sowray Holstein Friesian dairy farming family from Bowes Green Farm, Bishop Thornton, won yet another rearing calf title, doubling up with the reserve championship, at Skipton Auction Mart’s summer show. (Mon, July 31) Brothers Shaun, Peter and Paul Sowray took the leading honour with their first prize six-week-old British Blue-cross heifer calf, a Dazzle daughter which went on to sell for the day’s top call of £515 to Ian Ibbotson, of Oakworth.

Kieran, four, outguns dad to retain Skipton young farmers’ lambs title Kieran Robinson, a four-year-old livewire from Barnoldswick, got the better of his 26-year-old father, Scott, when retaining the supreme championship he won the previous year at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual young handlers’ prime lamb show and sale.(Monday, July 31)

Second Skipton store lamb sale trade very similar to seasonal opener Skipton Auction Mart’s second store lamb sale attracted another strong turnout of 3,604 head, which sold to an overall average of £62.65 each. (Wed, July 26) Trade for most types was almost identical to the seasonal opener a fortnight earlier, though a few pens of the best smart lambs proved dearer. Strong first-cross lambs sold into the late £60s to £70 and to £73 per head for a Texel-cross pen of 50 from Michael and Carol McKenzie, of Arncliffe.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Forward: 3,718 SHEEP comp: 3,604 Store Lambs (Overall av £62.65) 114 Breeding Ewes (Av £109.64) CCM Auctions held their second fortnightly sale of Store Sheep at Skipton on Wednesday where trade was seen to be very similar for most types to those prices seen at the opening sale, a few pens of best smart lambs would be dearer, strong first cross lambs made late 60’s to £70 with the best at £73 from Michael Mckenzie. The 400 Mule Wether Lambs in the entry were keenly contested and would be dearer too, medium keep lambs would be very similar.

Craven Dairy Auction (29 head) Milkers into an extra gear today with a top price of £2200 for a heifer from Tony Swires of Stainburn who also saw his consignment of four average £2020. KT Wood & Son, Holcombe found their reserve champion heifer first in the ring but nobody held watching it reach £2100 selling to regular supporter Brian Blezard of Ribchester.

Another Swires family success at Craven Dairy Auction Commercial Holstein Friesian entries bagged the principal prizes in the newly calven show classes at Skipton Auction Mart’s main July Craven Dairy Auction show and sale, as trade for milkers stepped up a gear.

Irish couple top dogs again with fabulous Skipton foursome Unbroken pen sees new record high price of 2,500gns North County Dublin’s Brian White and Aoife Smith were again the standout performers by a country mile when heading the day’s prices at 7,200 guineas (£7,560) and selling four dogs in total for a combined 20,100gns (£21,105) at Skipton Auction Mart’s summer sale of working sheep dogs, which also saw a new all-time record high price of 2,500gns in the unbroken pen.

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 405 head of cattle Comprising: 119 Young Feeding Bulls, 25 Beef Feeding Cows, 243 Bullocks & Heifers, & 18 Breeding Cattle. A good show of cattle for CCM Auctions fortnightly sale at Skipton Auction Mart. With the run of Spring 2016 born bulls reducing premium 10 month old farm assured cattle met a very strong trade. Small young bulls also met a ready audience from bull finishers and customers looking for grazing steers. Store cattle were a keen trade all sale, stronger cattle were in great demand, with smart stuff £1250 to £1350, two pens of strong Black & Whites at £1100 each, plenty of yearling grazing bullocks from £1000 to £1000, lesser end late 800’s plus. Heifers keenly contested all sale with additional customers for grazing cattle to take advantage of grass supplies.

CALVES - MONDAY 17TH JULY 2017

Rearing Calves to £450 (81) B&W&Dairy Shorthorn av £90.28 Cont av £361.30 Native av £254.56 Good trade throughout the breed sections for calves from British Blue Bulls headed up by Ian Collins with a 24 day old calf which sold for £450. Church Farm Enterprises presented a lovely pen of British Blue heifer calves at just over a month in age which average £408 for 4. Strong bidding for Native breeds both bulls and heifers with the pick of the Angus £375 from Richard Spence and Edward Berry £320 for a Hereford Bull. A higher percentage of Black and White bulls which were younger and bred from heifers met a good trade with the best black calves £158 for British Friesian from JC&DJ Marshall&Sons and crossed calves £145 from IR&DE Wellock.
