WEDNESDAY 12 JULY 2017 - STORE LAMBS

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Forward: 4,118 Head (Overall av £62.84). CCM Auctions held their Annual opening Sale of Store Lambs at Skipton on Wednesday where a there was a reasonable show for numbers for the time of year. The lambs were generally smaller than previous years, reflecting the lighter average prime weights also seen this last month. Like for like, lambs would mainly be £2-£3 dearer on the year, but smart lambs would be £5-£8 dearer, whilst a half bred first cross lamb was similar.

CCM Auctions conducted their fortnightly cattle sale at Skipton on Wednesday where there was a very tidy entry for mid summer.

Craven Dairy Auction (15 head) A much improved trade this week with Arla’s price increase looking to be the main catalyst today. Richard and Andrew Walker of East Morton took the Championship this morning with a cracking home bred heifer that was calved 14 days giving 31 litres sold to Richard Sutcliffe of Queensbury for £2180. The Reserve Champion picked out by Peter Sowray was presented by Wilson Stewart, Carlisle sold for £1880 selling to Richard Sutcliffe again.

First-time champion at Skipton prime lamb show Giggleswick farmer Mick Hewitt won his first championship at Skipton Auction Mart in the monthly prime lambs show. (Mon, July 3) Judge Nick Dalby, of Hartwith, selected Mr Hewitt’s pen of five Beltex-crosses, got by a Critchley tup. He sold the 39kg lambs for £101 each, or 259p/kg to Hartshead Meat Co in Mossley, who also bought the reserve champion and second prize Continental pen, for £98 apiece from the Robinson family on Tosside.

Dairy champion sells for £2,180 as trade improves Richard and Andrew Walker, of East Morton, seized their first dairy championship at Skipton Auction Mart on Monday. There was a much improved trade this week, with Arla’s price increase looking to be the main catalyst. Show judge Peter Sowray, of Bishop Thornton, picked out the champion, a cracking home-bred heifer, calved 14 days and giving 31 litres, which sold to Richard Sutcliffe, of Queensbury, for £2,180. Mr Sutcliffe also bought the reserve champion for £1,880, from Wilson Stewart, of Carlisle.

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 659 head of cattle Comprising: 121 Young Feeding Bulls, 18 Beef Feeding Cows, 369 Bullocks & Heifers, & 151 Breeding Cattle. A great sale for June with 659 head of cattle sold. Young Bulls were first to sell and were easily sold to a large contingent of buyers, the stronger sorts were £1100 plus, and an overall average of £1037 showed the strength of the trade. A lighter show of cows topped at £1180 for a nice Limousin from Jonathan Townley of Clapham, closely followed at £1100 for a Charolais x from D Pawson, Billinge.

Heady turnout of 659 at Skipton cattle highlight Cattle numbers passing through Skipton Auction Mart show no signs of letting up and the latest fortnightly Wednesday sale attracted a very high turnout for the time of year with 659 head forward and all successfully sold. (June 21) The fixture incorporated a well-supported sale of 151 beef breeding cattle, including significant standalone consignments of cows with calves at foot, which were eagerly sought by returning buyers.

Craven Dairy Auction (22 head) A cracking trade for the milkers forward today with the Reserve Champion from the Fort family of Glusburn taking the top price at £2050, giving 26 litres and just calved a week sold to Mark Goodall of Tong. Champion from Sally Wellock of Oakworth was giving 25 Litres and sold again to Mark Goodall of Tong for £1920.
