ADDINGHAM SHEEP BREEDERS - WEDNESDAY 12TH DECEMBER 2018

Baa-gains galore at CCM Addingham Sheepbreeders charity lambs sale There were baa-gains galore at Addingham & District Sheep Breeders’ Association’s 12th annual charity show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Wed, Dec 12) Big-hearted farmers donated 27 lambs in total, the majority North of England Mules, and bidders at the ringside were equally as generous when the lambs went under the hammer, this year raising £3,800 in aid of annual beneficiary, Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope. The annual showcase has now raised around £44,000 for Manorlands.

WINTER SALE OF PURE BRED AND SHOW QUALITY CONTINENTAL EWES. This year’s Annual Winter Sale of individual and small groups of Continental sired sheep was one of the best yet. A very nice entry of 102 head saw a better quality show overall, and sheep had scanned better with a greater proportion of twins.

David Pownall champion again at Skipton Christmas poultry showcase Derbyshire’s David Pownall won his second Craven Feather Auctions championship of the year at the annual Christmas show and sale of poultry and waterfowl staged at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Dec 8) Mr Pownall, of Riverside Cottage, Old Glossop, was following up on his title-winning success at the previous show in September, again with a pair of 2018 White Wyandotte bantams, out of top show stock.

BELTEX WINTER FEMALES - SATURDAY 8TH DECEMBER 2018

Matthew Burleigh champion again at CCM Skipton Beltex winter females showcase Northern Ireland breeder Matthew Burleigh’s Matt’s pedigree flock stood supreme champion for the second consecutive year, also taking the reserve championship at The Northern Beltex Society’s seventh annual winter show and sale of pedigree in-lamb ewes at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Dec 8) Mr Burleigh, who again travelled over from Shanra, Enniskillen, in Co Fermanagh, retained the title with his first prize shearling ewe, Matt’s Candle Light, which, like his 2017 victor, is a daughter of Kingledores Apollo, bred in Scotland by Biggar’s Richard Wood and acquired for 5,580gns in 2015 when standing male and reserve supreme champion at Carlisle.

Fox Farms clean up at CCM Christmas store cattle showcase Fox Farms, of Withgill, Clitheroe, stepped forward to clinch both champion and reserve champion honours at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Christmas store cattle fixture. (Wed, Dec 5) Peter Fox, one of the farming brothers who have won multiple prizes for their livestock at the mart over many years, claimed first and second prize in the heifers show class and first prize in the bullocks section.

DAIRY CHRISTMAS SHOW - MONDAY 3RD DECEMBER 2018

Craven Dairy Auction (58 head) Brian Moorhouse takes the Christmas Dairy Championship once again with his 31 litre Grafeeti Daughter, which went on to sell for £2220 to John Howard of Heslaker. The next in line was a sweet pedigree heifer from David Lawson of Arthington boasting 5 generations of VG or Ex sold for £1800 to Brian Blezard of Ribchester. A large show of youngstock met a fluctuating trade with incalf heifers arguably a straight trade considering the current industry circumstances, however a healthy ringside of buyers meant for a healthy trade. Chris Drake took home the Frank Wade Perpetual Trophy for his Incalf heifer (due to the Aberdeen Angus for Feb) she sold for £1010 to David Shuttleworth of Gargrave.

Brian Moorhouse is Craven Dairy Auction Christmas champion once more Bell Busk farmer Brian Moorhouse seized the Christmas Dairy Championship once again at Skipton Auction Mart this week. (MON DEC 3) The Moorhouses are regular winners at CCM with their Aireburn pedigree Holstein herd at Hesper Farm, and bagged the festive championship last year, having been reserve champions in the corresponding fixture in 2016.

HOLLIN RAIKES FARM SALE - FRIDAY 30th NOVEMBER

CCM Auctions conducted a Farm Dispersal Sale at Hollin Raikes Farm, Cowling on Friday 30th November 2018, upon the Instructions of Messrs R&VM Clarke who have sold the farm and are moving to a new holding. The sale included a great selection of tractors, grassland machinery, implements, livestock equipment and sundry smaller items all which have been used in the working of this marginal upland hill farm over the years. The quality of items attracted a very large gathering of both local and distant buyers, with many Irish buyers also present. Bidding was brisk, and a sample of prices are as follows:

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Forward: 3,442 Head – 3297 Store Lambs & 145 Feeding Ewes and Breeding Sheep Store Lamb Overall av £61.27 A tidy show of sheep sold to a very good trade, with strong Texels in high demand, topping at £95 from RJ Bailey of Reeth who also sold others at £88. Rob Smith, Steeton sold Texels to £90. Best Suffolks and smarter but smaller Beltex also into the 70’s. The next grade of medium keep Lowland lambs was £65-£70, whilst smaller lambs were £58-£64.

CALF MARKET REPORT - MONDAY 26th NOVEMBER 2018

A fantastic day in the calf ring for the Christmas Calf show with the judging carried out by Will Gore-Browne of SIlsden Moor. The Champion Rosette ended up in the hands of Marcus Chadwick of Chadwick and Leaver of Southfield, Nr Burnley. A fantastic Simmental bred calf at just 7 weeks of age sold for £440 to the Judge.
