Red Rose blooms at Skipton shearling gimmer showcase Red Rose exhibitors landed the principal honours in the two show classes staged at Skipton Auction Mart’s second annual shearling gimmer fixture. (Tues, Sept 18) First prize in the Mules show fell to Thomas and Sheila Binns, of Hecklin Farm, Downham, with a pen of ten, which has been purchased as gimmer lambs at the previous year’s North of England Mule Sheep Association (NEMSA) autumn sales, which the Binns family has been supporting for more than 20 years.

John Stott Jnr claims 700gns to price at 2018 Skipton Charollais rams showcase Cumbrian Charollais sheep breeder John Stott Jnr, who runs the Kingsland pedigree flock in Crosscrake, Stainton, near Kendal, claimed top price of 700gns at the British Charollais Sheep Society’s annual show and sale of commercial rams at Skipton Auction Mart. (Tues, Sept 18) He achieved it with a home-bred shearling ram, one of February, 2017, born twins by a sire from the Marwood family’s renowned Foulrice flock, himself by the highly regarded Marwood tup, Dalby Mount Aloe. The top price performer was claimed by J Riley & Son, of Castleford.

Rearing Calves to £500 (76) B&W av £71.11 Cont av £304.59 Native av £158.35 76 calves through the door this morning with a trade slightly easier in places. Natives saw a steady trade, with AA bulls and heifers averaging nicely at £195 and £170 respectively. British Blue bulls saw some strong competition with the best calf seen in the market for quite a while sold for £500, with other straight BB bulls selling regularly between £370 to £415.

Moorhouses make hay again with another Craven Dairy Auction champion Brian and Judith Moorhouse’s Aireburn pedigree dairy herd at Hesper Farm, Bell Busk, sent out another Craven Dairy Auction champion at the opening September show and sale. (Mon, Sept 10) Securing another in a long line of title wins at their local mart was the couple’s first prize newly calven heifer, Aireburn Corinthian Stephanie, one of only two daughters in the herd to date by the Genus sire, Ballycairn Corinthian, and the first to come to market. Ten days calved and giving 30 litres, the victor sold for £1,800 to Brian Blezard, of Ribchester

Craven Dairy Auction (32 head) The shippon numbers were boosted this morning with a run of 20 Dispersal milkers with 12 entries from usual vendors making the total entry. Frank Wrathall undertook the judging prior to the sale with Brian Moorhouse of Bell Busk taking top honours with his 30kg heifer selling for £1800 to Brian Blezard of Ribchester. However it was the Reserve Champion which caught the eyes of a number of bidders, the 31kg heifer presented by Robin Jennings, South Stainley sold for £1950 to Mark Goodall of Tong.

David Pownall pair head pecking order at CCM Skipton poultry showcase Derbyshire’s David Pownall ruled the roost at the Craven Feather Auction show and sale staged at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Sept 8) Mr Pownall, of Riverside Cottage, Old Glossop, secured another Skipton title – he won his first at the North Yorkshire venue in 2013 – with a pair of 2018 White Wyandotte bantams, out of top show stock and later sold for £70.

Herdwicks top of the flocks at CCM Skipton native and rare breeds highlight Herdwick sheep were top of the flocks when taking both championship and reserve championship honours at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Rare & Native Stock Breeders Auctions of rare, minority and traditional breeds. (Sat, Sept 8) With another wide and diverse variety of sheep penned for both showing and sale - over 500 head were forward in total - judge Margaret Watkinson, of Hutton Sessay, found both her principals in a strong hill and heath show class.

RARE BREEDS The rare breed sale at Craven Cattle Marts at Skipton Auction Mart was once again well supported, with a wide variety of sheep up for grabs at this sale. David and Kath Wilson of Crimple head kindly donated a Teeswater Shearling Gimmer to be auctioned for Parkinsons UK charity. The gimmer made £120 and was bought by Mr Sleightholme. Top price today came from Mr D Booth 240gns. Full report below.
