MARKET REPORT - WEDNESDAY 11th JUNE 2014

Forward: 432 head of cattle Comprising: 149 Young Feeding Bulls, 257 Bullocks & Heifers, 3 Feeding Cows & 23 Breeding Cattle. A large entry of cattle were forward for sale at Skipton on Wednesday and attracted a full attendance of buyers. Bull trade was brisker than anticipted with several customers making the journey from midlands counties to compete for the entry on offer. In the store section there was a full range of cattle on offer from smart continental bred forward stores which sold away nicely, whilst the grazing cattle and suckler calves found many bidders eager to keep sheds and fields topped up at realistic prices. Several runs of Angus and Hereford cattle were keenly sought, whilst Black & White Bullocks were forward in good numbers and attracted a few fresh faces to the ringside.

Lawson family continue tradition of champions at Skipton Auction Mart The young Lawsons, Suzy and Matt, of Mill Farm, Arthington, came out on top at the Craven Dairy Auction at Skipton Auction Mart. Attending the show in place of their father, David Lawson, the young team were champions with a lovely pedigree newly calven heifer, five weeks calved and giving 34kgs. The champion, sired by Enmark Mammoth, was eventually knocked down to the returning father and son team of Stephen and Edward Jeanes, from Glusburn, for £2,350.

Craven Dairy Auction (48 head) A mixed show of cattle with support for all types, right from the word go. Regular show toppers the Lawson family were once again Champions with a lovely Pedigree Newly Calven Heifer 5 weeks calved and giving 34kgs eventually getting knocked down to the returning father and son team of Stephen and Edward Jeanes, Glusburn. Reserve Champion heifer from Robin & Cath Jennings, a fine beast calved 12 days and giving a tank filling 35kgs reaching a straight price of £2020 to regular Jennings supporter Brian Blezard of Ribchester.

Lingfields Beef Cattle Fair (Multi-Breed) The Oddacres Limousin herd property of John & Claire Mason headed up the prices for the second successive sale at the Lingfields Cattle Fair. Oddacres Inca the 13 month old son of Homebyres Dixon was picked out by show judge Richard Brown as his reserve champion in the pre-sale show and went on to join Messrs JJ Dalby & Son of Wetherby for 4100gns. The Oddacres herd also produced the 2009 Stock Bull Econome bred by Earl Mazaud which sold to local dairy farmer John Howard for 2300gns.

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 511 head of cattle Comprising: 136 Young Feeding Bulls, 250 Bullocks & Heifers, 105 Breeding Cattle & 20 Pedigree Bulls. A busy ringside of customers present helped to produce a trade that would be better than expected for the young bulls, and the vast majority of store cattle as well. All cattle were well contested as feeders like to keep sheds topped up and grazers wanting to take advantage of an abundance of grass.

Moorhouse milker champion again at Craven Dairy Auction A standout newly calven heifer bagged another Craven Dairy Auction championship for local breeders Brian and Judith Moorhouse at Skipton Auction Mart’s bank holiday Monday show and sale.The Moorhouses, who run the Aireburn pedigree Holstein herd at Hesper Farm, Bell Busk, clinched the latest in a long line of titles with a home-bred daughter of the Worldwide Sires’ dairy bull Regancrest Mr Sam, who has been well utilised by the couple, having been responsible for past Craven Dairy Auction champions and prizewinners.

MARKET REPOER - MONDAY 19th MAY 2014 E&L

612 Breeding Sheep comprising 262 Hoggs & Ewes with 350 Lambs @ Foot. A smaller show sold well. A good full ringside of buyers assembled late in the season and quality Continental sheep sold well for the equivalent of £80 to £100 per life regardless of age. Strong Mule Hoggs with lambs £185 to £205 the outfit, but some with not just the same power at £160 to £180 the outfit.

MARKET REPORT - FRIDAY 16TH MAY

Northern Ireland’s Hugh McKee led the field on price at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Spring sale of working sheep dogs. Mr McKee, a noted sheep dog trainer, who hails from the fishing village of Kilkeel in County Down, reeled in top price honours when selling his two-year-old fully home bred tri-coloured bitch Nell for 3,200gns.
