DAIRY REPORT - MONDAY 18TH JUNE 2018

Craven Dairy Auction (18 head) A healthy trade for the milkers on offer today and a strong average to match with all milkers averaging £1860. Sally Wellock of West House Farm, Oakworth topping the days sale at £2080 for a 28kg, 8 day calved heifer. Brian Moorhouse of Hesper Farm, Bell Busk was next with his Grafeeti heifer selling to £2020.

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 507 head of cattle Comprising: 441 Feeding Cattle (123 Young Bulls, 46 Beef Feeding Cows, 272 Bullocks & Heifers) & 66 Breeding Cattle. With the 2017 born bulls eligible to be sold as under 16months and farm assured reducing in number, trade hit a new level. Andy Rigby topped with both under 10 mo and under 12 months sections, trade spilled into the older bulls with a 21 months old dairy bred at £1160 and average of £950.

164 Breeding Sheep A great show for early June, and a great trade too. With this amount of demand plenty more are needed for next week, please enter sheep with the office by 12noon on Friday for catalogue. Some Hoggs with Lambs today topping at £195 for Texels from ASE Crisp & Son, others at £190 from the same home. Mules to £175 from HF Stubbs. Some flock age Texels with twins around the £180-£190 mark, whilst single outfits with strong lambs were a sharp trade ranging from £120 to £140. Some older Hill bred sheep with singles £80 to £95 the outfit.

CALVES - MONDAY 4TH JUNE 2018

Rearing Calves to £470 X2 (32) B&W av £83.88 Cont av £383.5 Native av £251.2 32 calves through the door this morning however a full ringside of buyers made for a very healthy trade. Blue heifers would have the pick of the trade with 7 heifers over £400 and topping with a heifer from John Marshall of Dacre at £435. A strong turnout of continental bulls saw Martyn Jennings of Cowling saw all of his bulls reach past £450 and top at £470 with Church Farm Enterprises also at £450. Black and whites were a nice trade once again with some young calves easing the average however anything with a hint of flesh was well past the £100 mark.

Browns go out with a bang as CCM Skipton prime lamb champions Lancashire husband and wife pedigree sheep breeders, Alex and Gemma Brown, sent out their first – and last – champions at Skipton Auction Mart’s June prime lambs show. (Mon, June 4) For the Browns, of Brookfield Farm, Tockholes, near Darwen, are retiring after a lifetime in the industry and consigned seven of the final ten new season lambs remaining in their flock on what represented their first-ever foray into the Skipton sheep show arena.

Ravensgate Mars sparkles to bag Craven Dairy Auction title Peter Baul, who trades as M Baul & Partners and runs the Ravensgate pedigree Holstein herd at Watergate Farm, Bishop Thornton, picked up his first Craven Dairy Auction championship of 2018 at the late May show. (Monday, May 28).

EWE & LAMB PRESS - MONDAY 28TH MAY 2018

John Bland five-timer at Skipton ewes with lambs bank holiday show Derbyshire’s John Bland notched up a fabulous five-timer on his annual visit to Skipton Auction Mart’s late season bank holiday show and sale of single ewes with lambs at foot. (Monday, May 28) Mr Bland, of Crowden House Farm, Crowden, won the horned show class for the fifth year in succession with a Swaledale shearling ewe by a home-bred ram with her single pure-bred gimmer lamb at foot, got by a Paul Ewbank tup. The pair sold locally for £225 to Jeff Throup on Silsden Moor.

TOTAL: 914 Head of Cattle inc: 811 Feeding Cattle (216 Young Bulls, 66 Beef Feeding Cows, 528 Bullocks & Heifers) 114 Beef Breeding Cattle. Feeding Bulls – still a keen demand from buyers looking to keep bull pens full. Bulls under 10 months averaged £1025 with 2 November born British Blue crosses the pick from John and Gill Huck of Hubberholme at £1300. Bulls 11 to 12 months averaged £1002with a top of £1300 from Alan Lodge of Malham Moor.
