CALF SHOW - MONDAY 20TH FEBRUARY 2017

Rearing Calves to £490 (90) B&W av £50.41 Cont av £331 Native av £164 A great success at the February show for the Sowray family with their British Blue X heifer taking the Championship and the top price at £490, a heifer winning is a bit of a rarity in recent times however this was an exceptional heifer and went on to top the sale selling to the Abbot Bros of Dacre.

STORE CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 15TH FEBRUARY 2017

Forward: 908 head of cattle Comprising: 283 Young Feeding Bulls, 8 Beef Feeding Cows, 579 Bullocks & Heifers, 38 Pedigree & Beef Breeding Cattle. Young bulls witnessed a trade a shade easier to a fortnight ago with the difference being in the 400kg bulls. RS Harker & Son leading the prices with a Limousin bull at £1380 and also took the pen of three top price with three limousin’s at £1170. Overall average for all the bulls was £1006. Still plenty of Spring 2016 bulls making between £850 and £1050.

At the Craven Champions Sale 2017, the pre sale show on Tuesday evening saw a wonderful entry of 81 Cattle for the ten classes, judging was undertaken by one the UK’s leading showmen Mr Phil Sellers of Lincoln who has won virtually every major national show during summer and winter with his show cattle. His expertise was called upon all evening with some very strong classes of cattle placed before him, and the quality on offer was a great reflection of the type of cattle available at Skipton on a regular basis.

Sheila Mason the maestro at Craven Champions showcase Title winner sells for new Skipton record store price North Craven’s Sheila Mason was supreme champion with an eight-month-old British Blue-sired heifer at the Craven Champions’ double-header, the annual opening show and sale of store cattle with show potential at Skipton Auction Mart. The title winner also set a new centre record price for a store animal when selling for £3,200. (Tues & Wed, Feb 14 & 15)

A few handy prices for the better end of the continental bulls and heifers with Richard Spence of Sutton topping with his bull at £350 and his Limousin topping the heifers at £340 with Sowray’s not far behind at £330.

STORE LAMBS & BREEDING SHEEP - WEDNESDAY 8TH FEBRUARY 2017

Forward: 812 Head, 352 Store Lambs & 460 Breeding Sheep Overall av £50.40 Healthy trade for the 352 lambs on sale with mule gimmer lambs from BW Appleton reaching £72 and topping the days trade with a pen of Beltex lambs from AM&HV Brown realising £70. Lambs with frame and shape were easily sold with the Suffolks on offer today averaging £58. Small swale wethers sold particularly well to an average of £27.

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle FORWARD: 908 HEAD OF CATTLE Comprising: 308 Young Feeding Bulls, 15 Beef Feeding Cows, 571 Bullocks & Heifers & 14 Breeding Cattle. Another tremendous show of cattle forward for CCM Auctions fortnightly cattle Sale at Skipton Mart held on Wednesday. Store Bulls were again a fast selling trade with the 308 head levelling at £1005.66 across the board. Premium Bulls were again good to sell, whilst the nice square Charollais and Limousin types again receiving a great following. The Beef Bred Feeding Cow section continues to attract more cattle, and todays offering was keenly bid for, top price of £990 for Piedmontese cross form Messrs Sandham, levelling at £757 for the 15 forward. In the Store Cattle section there were some tremendous runs of cattle some of which were fit for service as part of the Annual Special Sale of Bulling Heifers. John Walmsley of Woodcock Hill had his Annual Consignment of Homebred Black Limousin Bulling Heifers, shown in great condition and benefitting from being BVD and Lepto Vaccinated they sold to a high of £1,580 and the run averaged £1,472. Other heifers for bulling found a sound trade all day, especially those in health schemes and homebred. Messrs Sandham had a great run of cattle selling Blue Heifers to £1,560, Blue Bullocks to £1,580, Charollais Bullocks to £1,480 and both Limousin and Blonde Bullocks to £1,400. Yearling Cattle were a nice trade with both local and travelled buyers looking for numbers

Primestock special sales well received at CCM Skipton Special primestock sales to cater for both vendors and buyers were staged between Christmas and the New Year at Skipton Auction Mart, on Thursday, December 28. A small, but select offering of prime cattle saw eight of the 13 under 30-month entries fall to the year’s principal buyer, Keelham Farm Shop, as co-owner James Robertshaw returned to re-stock the meat fridges for his two award-winning shops in Skipton and Thornton.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sheep Sale: 1,217 Store Lambs & 13 Blue Faced Leicester Females There was a larger entry of lambs this fortnight, but quality was very mixed with lambs generally smaller than the previous sale. Anything with strength and type was well bid for, whilst the long keep lambs were keenly sought with feeder finishers reporting a good supply of winter forage that needs eating.
