STORE CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 23RD NOVEMBER 2016

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 339 head of cattle Comprising: 91 Young Feeding Bulls, 9 Beef Feeding Cows, 236 Bullocks & Heifers, & 3 Breeding Cattle. A decent November show of cattle with quality sorts a very good trade. Strong Bulls good to sell, Messrs Gornall of Croft House, which is right at the top of Dent Dale, topped the section at £1290 with a 13 month Lim Bull. Those rising a year old weren’t too far behind with Messrs Wilkinson of Out Rawcliffe had a great run of Blue bred bulls at 11-12mo from £11990 up to £1280. James Huck of Sowerthwaite, Austwick had a great run of 8-9month old Limousin and Blonde crosses the two best at £1250 £1240 and others at 1200.

STORE LAMBS - WEDNESDAY 16TH NOVEMBER 2016

Forward: 4344 Head, Overall av £51.69 A good number forward for the time of year with 4,344 through the ring with small long term lambs a strong trade throughout today although larger shorter term lambs did reflect the easing of trade in the prime ring. Still big runs were forward to buy today with 103 Suffolk lambs from RD Metcalfe, Brearton at £61, J&MM Walmsley, Worston with £139 at £60 and 101 Mule wethers from JW Hall, Darnbrook at £55.50. 154 Mule Gimmer Lambs went through the ring today and averaged £62 topping at £82 from JB Taylor, Diggle.

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 439 head of cattle Comprising: 79 Young Feeding Bulls, 4 Beef Feeding Cows, 264 Bullocks & Heifers, 88 Pedigree Cattle & 4 Breeding Cattle. A mixed show of cattle for a late Autumn sale met with a large company of buyers who were a little more cautious than of late. A shortage of stronger cattle were generally good to sell, as were smart younger cattle, but 2nd & 3rd quality sorts were cheaper.

Scottish partnership shines at Skipton Beef Shorthorn highlight Scottish Shorthorn breeders Thomson, Roddick & Laurie, who run the Shawhill herd in Eaglesfield, Lockerbie, secured a championship and reserve championship double with a pair of outstanding heifers at the seventh annual show and sale of pedigree Beef Shorthorn cattle staged on behalf of the North of England Beef Shorthorn Club at Skipton Auction Mart. (Wed, Nov 9) The title winner also headed the selling prices at 5,900gns, a new centre record price for a Beef Shorthorn.

DAIRY & CALVES - MONDAY 7TH NOVEMBER 2016

Craven Dairy Auction (32 head) A healthy show of milkers present this morning with 28 tied up in shippon. Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton took top honours when judge Wick Williams picked his 28kg, 16 day calved pedigree heifer from the Ravensgate herd which went on to sell for £1650 to the judge himself. Reserve Championship went to Robert Crisp of Calton with his big framed light heifer selling to the sale high of £1700 to Alf and Andrew Townsend. Keith Downs from Bingley brought four sweet heifers, all of which looked like very durable heifers and received £1650, £1620, £1400 and £1300 for his consignments.

WORKING SHEEP DOGS - FRIDAY 28TH OCTOBER 2016

Welsh and Irish lead the way at Skipton working dogs autumn highlight Welsh and Irish dogs, the latter in particular, had the pick of the trade at Skipton Auction Mart’s autumn working sheep dog sale, the final seasonal fixture of 2016. (Friday, October 28) The day’s top call of 5,800gns (£6,090) fell to a November, 2014, tri-coloured bitch, Llangwm Jen, from North Wales sheep farmer and dog trainer Sion Jones, who runs Cefn Eithin Sheep Dogs in Corwen.
