BREEDING SHEEP - TUESDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2018

MARKET REPORT – TUESDAY 28th OCTOBER 2018 FORWARD: 1,532 Breeding Sheep & Gimmer Lambs. (1364 Gimmer Lambs and 168 Dalesbred Sheep) CCM Auctions conducted their fourth fortnightly sale of Gimmer Lambs at Skipton on Tuesday where there was a greater demand in evidence from a larger contingent of Southern buyers, many of whom were making their first trips North this season for sheep.

DALESBRED SHEEP - TUESDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2018

ANNUAL SALE OF RIGISTERED DALESBRED SHEEP The champion sheep at the Annual Show & Sale of Dalesbred sheep held on behalf of the Dalesbred Sheep Breeders Association was a shoutey ram shown by Godfrey and Alison Haygarth of Wigglesworth bred by a Kelsall ram of out a John Harrison bred ewe. The ram joined Mrs C Harrison at Blubberhouses for 400gns. Mesrs Haygarth also sold a John Harriosn bred shearling ram for 260gns to EW&JR Parkinson of Dunsop bridge.

Craven Dairy Auction (17 head) 17 head arrived through the door this morning with a straight show of heifers and cows on offer. Today’s Champion came in the form of a Pedigree Heifer from Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton, giving 30kg and very sweet, she ended up selling for £2,000 to the Judge Martyn Jennings of Cowling.

Peter Baul and Baloo heifer bag Craven dairy championship Bishop Thornton’s Peter Baul, of the Ravensgate pedigree Holstein herd at Watergate Farm, bagged his second Craven Dairy Auction championship of the year at October’s second monthly show and sale. (Mon, Oct 22) He took top honours with first prize newly calven heifer, Ravensgate Baloo Ruby 55, by the Cogent sire, Sahara Baloo, out of Ravensgate Jeeves Ruby 47. Calved for 21 days and giving 30kg, the victor sold for £2,000 top price to show judge Martyn Jennings, of Cowling.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs Forward: 5707 Head (Overall av £57.21) CCM Auctions conducted their fortnightly sale of store sheep at Skipton on Wednesday where a nice show of lambs were keenly contested and prices showing a rise on the previous sale. Continental and Down cross lambs were especially good to sell with averages for Suffolks and Texels both over £60, and Beltex’s averaging £71.05.

FORWARD: 768 Breeding & 56 Rams. Ewes and Shearlings in better demand than of late, especially Lleyn Shearlings which saw best sorts £115 to a top of £142 from Richard Paul of Arncliffe. Second quality ewes selling away well and a shade dearer than previous sales. Horned sheep finding a ready market place with the majority being correct below.

CALVES - MONDAY 15TH OCTOBER 2018

Rearing Calves to £520 (78) Dairy av £73.38 Cont av £304.8 Native av £177.76 £520 was the top call of the day at today’s autumn calf show with a healthy trade throughout. The champion calf presented by Shaun Sowray of A Sowray & Son, Bishop Thornton was an exceptionally well shaped British Blue bull and sold for the highest price of the day. Limousin’s saw some heady prices too with bulls averaging £381 and heifers £277, Native bulls saw some fierce competition with Sowray’s topping again at £330 for a strong Angus bull.

PEDIGREE CHAROLLAIS - SATURDAY 13TH OCTOBER 2018

Pedigree Charollais Females A strong sale was witnessed at Skipton on Saturday when 88 Pedigree Charollais Females were brought forward for sale from members of The BCSS Northern Region with an overall selling average of £565 per head. The highlight of the sale came in the form of a Ewe lamb (lot 67) from Charles and Stephen Marwood’s Foulrice “Celebration Sale”.

Enhanced Skipton native store cattle fixture a resounding success A much enhanced annual autumn fixture for native store cattle at Skipton Auction Mart was well supported by both buyers and vendors alike, attracting a strong and significantly increased turnout of over 100 head and support from both Morrisons Supermarkets through its pioneering Beef Shorthorn Scheme and the Beef Shorthorn Society. (Wed, Sept 12) Taking both first and second prizes in the Beef Shorthorn show class were local breeders, the Daggett family, who run the 20-strong Hartlington Beef Shorthorn herd at Wharfe House Farm in the Yorkshire Dales village of the same name.

Irish quartet top dogs on price at CCM Skipton Autumn highlight County Antrim’s Daniel McAllister leads the way with highest-ever 7,000gns sale Irish entries proved top dogs on price at 7,000gns (£7,350), 4,600gns (£4,830), 4,500gns (£4,725) and 3,900gns (£4,095) at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual autumn sale of working sheep dogs, when wet weather and high winds failed to dampen spirits at another highly successful fixture at the UK’s leading dog sale venue, when Scottish buyers in particular were out in force. Cattle take centre stage at CCM Skipton Autumn highlight A bumper bovine entry approaching 700 head took centre stage at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Autumn Pedigree Day, featuring shows for multi-breed beef breeding cattle, suckled bulls, steer and heifer calves, primarily 2018-born. (Wed, Oct 10) This year’s pedigree fixture attracted a much larger turnout of 50 bulls and females and a top call of 1,700gns for a 2015-born Aberdeen-Angus bull, Crook Rise Pendle, from local breeders, John and Judith Garnett in Draughton.
