BREEDING SHEEP - TUESDAY 18TH OCTOBER 2016

FORWARD: 2,602 Breeding Sheep & Gimmer Lambs. (2,380 Gimmer Lambs and 222 Dalesbred Sheep) CCM Auctions conducted their fourth fortnightly sale of Gimmer Lambs at Skipton on Wednesday where a good entry attracted a very busy ringside of customers keen for sheep late in the season. A few pens of Mules topped £100 with Kevin Wilson leading the sale at £108, Jack Berry t/a JH Throup at £100, other leading pens in the 90’s. Overall there were 2,152 Mules entered and they averaged £72.41 overall, NEMSA coming in at £74.09 (+£2.33) other Mules at £71.76 (+£1.00).

Skipton Dalesbred rams highlight produces 260gns joint top prices Joint top prices of 260gns and a clearance rate of 84% for the 50-plus ‘gentlemen’ on parade were seen at the annual Dalesbred Sheep Breeders’ Association’s final seasonal show and sale of shearling and aged rams, and females, at Skipton Auction Mart.

Forward: 70 Prime cattle comprising 19 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos), 3 Clean Cattle (over 30 mos) & 48 Cast Cattle. 3,914 Prime Sheep comprising 3,537 Prime Lambs, 377 Cast Ewes & Rams. 81 Rearing Calves. 1 Loads of produce.

26 Beef Breeding Cattle; Including 15 Pedigree Cattle and 11 Breeding Cattle Records were broken for females at the Autumn pedigree event with the “Millers Cote Nook herd” was dispersed. Leading price was Millers Cote Jezabell a Wilodge Fastrac Heifer scanned incalf to Netherhall Jackpot for Jan/feb which sold to Kevin Sunderland of Rossendale for 4200gns. Not far behind was Millers Cote Ivy a 2013 “Carmorn Dauphin” daughter sold with her Wilodge Goldcard heifer calf and carrying a service to Galileo which joined CCM’s field person Janet Sheard.

New record for females at Skipton beef breeding cattle feature A new record for females was set at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Autumn pedigree event for multi-breed beef breeding cattle, which featured a dispersal sale for the Miller family’s Millerscotenook Limousin herd at Cote Meadow Nook Farm, Water, Rossendale. Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 683 head of cattle Comprising: 103 Young Feeding Bulls, 9 Beef Feeding Cows, 543 Bullocks & Heifers, 17 Pedigree Cattle & 11 Breeding Cattle. An increased entry of feeding bulls today as this year’s calves begin to come forward for sale. Strong bulls received plenty of attention with best £1,150 plus up to £1,340 for a cracker from Ben Townsend of Laneshawbridge. In the Store Section, quality of any age sold very well, but a plainer commercial quality type beast was a shade harder to sell. (Beef breeding report below)

FORWARD: 1,308 Breeding Sheep & Rams including Annual Sale of Lleyn Breeding sheep and Gimmer Lambs, Fortnightly Sale of Breeding Sheep and Third Sale of Swaledale Ewes. A mixed show for the fortnightly sale would see Mule, Halfbred and Continental shearlings dearer than the previous, whilst ewes saw better quality a decent trade but plainer sorts harder to cash. Forward: 72 Registered Swaledale Rams There was a large crowd gathered at Skipton on Monday Evening at CCM’s Annual Show & Sale of Swaledale Rams where 4 rams sold for 1,000gns but more impressive a 95% clearance rate, 76 rams forward and 72 sold. The first of the four figure prices came for a 3 shear ram consigned by JR Smith of Carleton. Bred by Colin Birbeck and used since a shearling it sold to SM Towler, Malham Moor.

DAIRY & CALVES - MONDAY 10TH OCTOBER 2016

Craven Dairy Auction (31 head) Brian Moorhouse of Bell Busk took the Dairy Championship today at the Early October Sale with his Pedigree Heifer calved 14 days and giving 30kg went on to sell for the sale high of £1950 to the Jeanes Family of Sutton In Craven. The reserve champion on the day came from the Calvert Bros of Crathorne with a sweet 40 litre heifer selling to £1680 to the Judge Brain Blezard of Ribchester.

PEDIGREE CHAROLLAIS FEMALES - SATURDAY 8TH OCTOBER 2016

Pedigree Charollais Females on behalf of The BCSS The Foulrice Flock property of Messrs Marwood from Whenby led the way at The British Charollais Sheep Society’s Autumn Sale of registered Charollais Females at Skipton on Saturday 8th October. It was a December 14 born shearling by Foulrice Lightening, a Castellau Krypton daughter out of a Head Master ewe that stood champion for the judge Mr David Roberts from Kenley in Shropshire. Having stood 1st prize ewe at both Ryedale & Kilnsey show this summer, she sold carrying twins to Foulrice Osprey, who was the Great Yorkshire Male Champion for 800gns, to the show judge Mr David Roberts.

STORE LAMBS - WEDNESDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2016

Forward: 8,171 Head, Overall av £58.18 A good number forward again for the Wednesday Store Lamb sale with an overall average of 58.18 with Texels averaging £60.02 and Suffolks £63.83 right through. Again Mules were on the receiving end of a good trade averaging £55.65 and topping with a pen from James and Deborah Hall of Darnbrook at £62 and Phillip Mudd of Buckden at £60.50 with a lot of strong framed lambs £55+ right through the day. John Smith of Carleton topped the day at £102, £100 with two pens of texel gimmer lambs with handy store lambs £60+ all day long. Suffolk gimmers were topped by Tony Shepherd of Eshton at £84 with Suffolk store lambs averaging £63.83.

Gimmer lambs out in force at Skipton A total of 6,649 ewe lambs, an increase of just over 1,000 head on the year, from over 100 sheep farmers across the region, had their day in the spotlight at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual seasonal fixture, which featured four breed shows for North of England Mule, Masham, Dales Mule and Swaledale lambs, with all four titles falling to local breeders. Robinson title winners head prices at Skipton Swaledale female highlight Swaledale females, 3,602 head in total, flocked to Skipton Auction Mart for the annual Saturday show and sale of draft ewes and gimmer shearlings, when the turnout sold to an overall average of £108.09 per head, an increase of £3.86 on last year’s corresponding fixture.
